Impressive MPG

For two weeks I'd done nothing but short stop start trips before the belt change, so I know 51 is ok really, but it's just with DIS showing 58...

BTW, what pressures are best? I have it set up for the recommended pressure for 4 people plus luggage. Should I go higher?

I've not gone above 2200 revs, into 2nd gear as soon as I'm moving, coasting, no faster than 60 mph, predictive driving etc etc...

Don't worry it takes a few tanks to even out- try and fill it to the same level each time to get more accurate readings.

Check tyre pressures though as Hooley says, (I run mine at 42PSI for better MPG) and check how long does your car take to reach an indicated 90C on the temp gauge. Sticky thermostats are very common on the A2 TDi and it kills MPG.

Cheers Dan, I'll try 42 psi. It heats up fine. I'm aware of 'stats.

Ta.

When my car had 2 different 'aftermarket' thermostats my car would take over 15 miles to get warm (1 mile to a dual carriageway, then sitting at 70 for 15 miles)
Now I have an OE Audi thermostat it takes about 3-4 miles

I stopped recording fuel consumption as I knew I was getting about 45-50 mpg until I corrected the problem
I run 205/50r16 tyres at 33psi, so fairly soft but now get over 58mpg when averaged.

When I travel short distances (mostly >10 miles) my average drops to late 47-50
And when I think I've joined the RAC rally I might get mid to low 40's

It surprises me every time I get the car round to 4000 rpm
The main surprise is nothing goes bang

Interesting mate. Is that 58 on DIS or Fuelly/your own calculations? I'm on tapatalk, so forgive if it's obvious on the main site...

I'm on tapatalk too

58 on Fuelly. I have no DIS, but the ones on my other 2 audis are rather optimistic.

My tyres do change the gearing by about 7% and will help with both economy (lower revs at speed) and increase comfort :)

What tyre size are you running, Jason? Did your A2 leave the factory with the SE wheels?

Ta,

Tom

I sold the original SE wheels once I bought the TT mini-fives
I now run 205/50r16 Falken FK452's
The speedo is now absolutely spot on

On a long fun now, and the temp gauge is moving between 11 and 12 o'clock... Much more noticeable after the belt and water pump change!!!!!!!! It's been bled, so it's gonna be new stat isn't it? How much are they?

Agree get an OEM one - I replaced a pattern one recently that had failed after only 6 months.
Also while you're doing it change the green 4-pin coolant temp sender too, they also have a habit of expiring.
About £25
Get an OE one though

Found the PDF guide, and ordered the 'stat from Audi. Anyone know the best way to bleed the air out of the system after I've replaced the ******? Thanks in advance. John.

Ah, indeed. I'm also on 205/50/R16 at the moment. Not that I'm a mathematical pedant, of course, but they increase the gearing by 3.38%. As you can imagine, an increase of 7% would cause speedo issues, and you'd simply struggle to get the tyres under the arches.

Tom,
I'm quoting my change from my previous tyres which were a mix of 4 different Asian brands and were undersized (and probably either 2nd hand or very cheap). They weren't the 'standard' SE 16inch tyre size.
Using one of the tyre calculators I got about (trying hard to remember) a 4% change from what they should have been
My old tyres were exactly that. Old, hard, cracked and under profiled. Once I moved to my Falkens it was bliss!!! Much more compliant and better grip

:D

Ah, I see. 205/50/R16 is a great size; they offer a superb compromise between grip, economy, comfort and looks.
I wonder what possessed the previous owner of your car to use such tiny tyres.

Afternoon chaps and chapettes.

Just filled up and have improved my MPG over the last tank (51 to 56.8), again with the longest of many journeys being prob no more than 6 miles. The last tank includes faffing round with the car idling when replacing the thermostat AND running with two flat tyres (oxidisation of the alloys, now sorted) too.

Also DIS is more accurate, indicating 55.5 MPG, and fuelly showing 56.8.

Got a PB, all short journeys again, longest being 10 miles I'd say. 58.6 mpg. Also, DIS is getting very accurate. Only 1 mpg out.
