Indicator Relay Repaired

Out in interest i swapped the grey and white wires, this now gives me a solid light on selecting left or right, not perfect but far better than nothing!
Hopefully the re arranged delivery i missed on saturday (awesome quick postage by Clackers) will arrive tomorrow, but if anyone can apply any lodgic to my current situation that would be wonderful!!

my 2001 tdi has recently been randomly starting the hazard warning lights and draining the battery when locked. The indicators worked fine. Last week finally got around to changing the hazard relay that is hidden behind the ashtray, quite a pain to get out.. I ended up taking side panel off to get access..

The relay pushes out to the left, on mine it was very hard to move.
Here’s the inside of the failed relay, the two black relays look like they’ve failed

A secondhand relay has cured the issue.
Anyone got the link to where these can be repaired? Cheers

The relays are replaceable if you have some soldering skills. They are still available on Mouser or Digikey. You would have to swap the blue capacitor too because it’s probably far out of spec by now.

It would be most effective to group buy the parts and have one person repair them to make the shipping cost worth it

I tried to repair one once, bought a replacement relay but with not having circuit board specialist equipment I failed. Really hope a repair solution is found!
The closest looking relay in the VAG range I have seen surprise surprise is the TT one but has 9 pins not 10 I believe?

The relays in my original (and spare I got to modify for use with LED bulbs) look quite different.
Mine is a 2001 manufactured car. Did the design change and are these relays any more reliable?

It’s hard to know, but they will just be from a different supplier. Realistically they’re all going to be beyond their rated life now so you’re probably relying on lucky manufacturing rather than the design being better

Depends if the PCB is different, on early and later versions. Could be just different relay types, early being open, as in your pic, and enclosed, as it other pics, in later versions, but same PCB layout.
A picture of the rear of the PCB, for both early and later units will show if there is a difference. There's probably a part number etched into the PCB, which will give the same information.
As @a-zwo says, the relays that are still working, are on borrowed time, especially on high mileage cars, (assuming high miles = high flash count).
Mac.
