Indicators

I have noticed within the last few months a lack of indication when turning. This is nearly always on a left turn, very often on a right turn and rarely on roundabouts. What has brought on this worrying trend? Also indicating after you have started or completed the manouevre is getting more common, particularly among young female drivers. Is this the way people are taught now, or are they simply lazy? Ok I am still a boring old f**t, but it's not at all funny when you are a pedestrian and a non indicating vehicle mows you down. Why do people abuse disabled parking spaces? If you want my space have my disability! That proves I'm still a boring old f**t, and that's why I don't shop at Tescos, staff in 3 branches have told me the management couldnt give a to** if people do that.

Lazy - thats exactly it.
Dont get me started on people using foglights when it not foggy.[3]

Well said Dick. I'm perfectly able bodied and have never used a disabled space but I'm always dumbfounded by the way the disabled and child/parent spaces are misused down Tesco's. There seems to be no deterreent nowadays for parkinganywhere and everywhere.
I have double yellows outside my house and I wrote an email to the council the other day asking why they bothered painting them as I've never seem a traffic warden to patrol them, let alone a ticket be issued even though they are parked on 24/7. No reply yet funnily enough.

I'm still a young'un (in the grand scheme of things) and the lack of indication winds me up as well. BMW drivers? School run?

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

People not indicating is my biggest frustration. Personally I indicate at all times - even when nothing is around as doing this has made it second nature. I have a theory with non-indicating at roundabout though - its because most people come to a complete stop anyway and treat them like junctions - they expect other people to stop if they are indicating or not - is it that most young drivers aren't taught that they are designed to KEEP THE TRAFFIC FLOWING and indicating helps - AAAGGGHHH!!!!

Also Dick, did you not know the revision to the highway code;

Old: Mirror - Signal - Manoeuvre
New: Manoeuvre - Mirror (if you can remember) - Signal (sometimes, but usually dont bother)

I was a motorbike instructor and examiner (old RAC-ACU scheme) we ALWAYS taught Look Signal Manoeuvre, not just MSM.
New thinking is that the steering wheel is to rest your book or newspaper on, the mirror to do your make up, and the indicator stalk to hang your handbag on, and that's just the fellas. Peters Micra has a hook to hang your takeaway on, now that's progressive thinking!

Ah, gets me mad too.

I followed one small van yesterday who didn't indicate at 6 junctions and two roundabouts, but did signal on the last turn off where I lost sight of him. Why so selective? If you think that much about if you should or shouldn't indicate, why not do it all the time as Kaine says. It's a darn good habit to get into and traffic would move a lot quicker if people indicated their intended route.

I'm afraid the standards of driving mirror general standards in society-not saying thank you when you hold the door for someone, not walking 3-wide on the pavement forcing you to walk into the road, or as I do now, just walk into them. At over 6 foot and 20 stone, I'll have a go if they want to start.

On a Advanced Driving Co*** it's actually Standard practise Not to indicated if there is no-one behind you.

I remember when I was learning to drive I was asked the question "What are indicators for?" to which I replied "They are my way of indicating my intentions to other road users" seemed logical but was put off by the responce "Its 7pm, its dark, and there is no-one around, do you indicate?" I replied "Yes" only to be told "NO", on thinking about for the rest of the lession I had to ask "why", Simple answer really "If no-one is arround then no-one will see if you indicate or not, after all they are for indicating your intentions to other road users"

Really bugs me that people don't use them, they are not difficult to use....are they....

So you are driving along in a 30/40 mph zone, it's dark...heck anytime of day, and you should look round to check there are no cars pulling out of junctions, car parks, driveways etc and then decide to indicate or not? What a load of twoddle.

Sorry, but if you spend that amount of concentration deciding to indicate or not, you are dangerous to other users.

And what about pedestrains? Do they not have a right to know which way you are going?

Interesting you say that, my sister did one of those courses and she was told the same. I was suprised.

I've done the IAM course too and was told only to indicate if there is someone around you to benefit from your indication.
But if in doubt I will indicate.....doesn't seem any harm not too and is certainly better than all the fools not indicating.

I will indicate always, it could be a Sinclair C5 creeping up behind me, and I wouldn't know, or a Motorcycle with a defective light, or no light,a pedestrian in dark clothing, or..... What bloo** stupid advice, even for the big I AM.
When one of my sons was having driving lessons, the radio was on, the Instructor argued politics all the time, and suggested that a baulk of timber under the pedal would make it more comfortable to rest his foot!!!

I taught over 350 people to drive cars or motorbikes, with not one failure, first time passes all. Either I am a super instructor, or our methods were sound, that's the answer, sound methods, we were all volunteers doing it to save lives and improve safety. We did not teach to pass the test,we knew that anyone properly taught would pass what is after all a very basic assessment of whether you were safe to learn more on your own. We were very suspicious of the methods of some driving schools, many simply driving the test routes to exhaustion.

Could'nt resist this one chaps, on the subject of knowing what is behind you and safe indication.
This will remind you of quite a recent road-safety campaign. Sorry if the wording offends anyone but worth a giggle! See the following link :
