Inlet Manifold Help

Thanks all, Any advice on what you use to clean?
Good question, I have to do same on another lower inlet manifold also bought from A2Steve!

The question was asked recently by Louis here but no real conclusion...

Many brands of snake oil out there, take your pick but do your research, but I am going to look into ultrasonic cleaning.

Best way to clean is leave to soak in diesel then rinse with petrol and scrub with a wire brush

It will come up like new

Will share some pictures of mine tomorrow :)

Yes.I know it is the thread I linked, a wire brush sounds harsh on the inside.

I have just been looking at this....

In looking at ultrasonic cleaning, I contacted a local company who recommended vapour blasting with microscopic glass beads. Any opinions?

Sorry to come back for more advice. The mechanic has asked if I want to reuse the gaskets or fit new ones. Not sure of the cost. Any advice from those in the know?

The gaskets on the one I’ve sent you were replaced less than a year ago if that helps!

I've decided to have it fitted as it is but this was the company I was speaking to. Seemed to know what they are doing. Might try them on my old one it's in one piece https://colnblastcleaning.co.uk
Been busy, interesting link local(ish) to me as well, I will give them a ring at some point. Know very little about ultrasonic cleaning so no comment on their suggested method. I would take the view they are the experts let them get on with it, but I suppose it all depends on price. What attracts me to ultrasonic is it can clean nooks and crannies that would be difficult/impossible manually.

Personally I would have pre-cleaned the manifold going on, not the other way round!, but it should mean you can recoup the cost in the selling price as long it not silly expensive. Can't quite get my head around the problem with the flaps is returning to closed, thought it would be the other way round - not fully opening. It would be good to see a good picture of the troublesome manifold when it comes off

No need to be sorry, cost I would think in the order of £30, there is a lot of them. I suppose it depends on the mechanic's opinion on the state of the gaskets on disassembly, but always a risk using old gaskets. I would renew the gaskets, wanting to minimise the risk of 'air leak detected' and the cost of basically doing the same job again to cure with new gaskets.

We are based in Tewkesbury and have the same issue with intake manifold flaps...they have been like it for years (error code that is) but faled MOT with light on so may have to fix it :(

You are not alone...

Worth checking though I belive EML should only be a fail for petrol cars registered after 1 July 2003. (diesel is 1/7/08)

July 2003 is the date I knew for EML also. DIdn't realise it was only petrol though. That's definitely useful to know about the EML not being a failure on any diesel A2's, takes a weight off my mind with three of them ?

RS Autotechnik seem to know what they are doing with mine but haven't had the bill yet!!!! Not that far from you. I'll keep you posted on when/if it is sorted.

They did say it would only by about £35 to vapour blast the manifold but just too complicated to get it there and Steve assured me it was ready to go. ?
Let me know if I can help out with getting parts to/from Gloucester for you.
I'm interested to see the old manifold as well, suspect it is just gummed up as mechanic has had it off now and didn't say it was in pieces.

I cleaned the inlet manifold I bought with carburettor cleaner, Scotchbrite and a lot of elbow grease. The edges of the flaps would catch, towards the end of their travel, on deposits on the wall of the flow path which I removed with a Dremel. I was then able to move the flaps the full extent of their travel with little force.
PS: I'd get new gaskets

£35 is not too bad, I will have to discuss it with them. Thank you for the offer of assistance but remember I am relatively local as well and don't mind a little run to Gloucester, it is a reasonably pleasant drive.

Well...we got it through the MOT...the engine light did fail first time and was included for our car on test. But as long as light not on dash when on ramp it went through. Phew. I cleared it with Torque Pro app and it came back on 5 mins after i left.

It did fail on hand brake cable nearside rear (cost me a fortune to get it replaced quickly) but have another years driving I hope.

Now to look at P1031 error (Intake Manifold flaps) jusat not sure what to do...either replace whole thing or try getting it cleaned first.
