Inner Gaiter removal, rounded spline bolt - Advice please!

Drinks all around! Amazon delivered the goods, and in 5 minutes, the ZXN had been gently tappy tap tapped in and the stud came undone easily. Onwards to the main job of yesterday morning, putting a gaiter on the CV. Huge thanks to all for your generous and well natured help!

Really glad you got there in the end. You can send the extractors and chisels back now. Just remember 6 points Torx 12 pointed ZXN or spline or triple square driver needed.

Well...you never know when I might need them!

Its undone at the Transmission end now, but not budging. I expect I need to give it some encouragement from the Hub end where it meets the drive shaft.

Not budging from the hub end. Completely arsed off with the whole thing now and lost my sense of humour.

Have you undone the driveshaft nut and the bottom ball joint? (I find it much easier to remove the shaft and do the repair in the vice)

Yes undone the driveshaft nut, no not undone the bottom ball joint. I thought the shaft would slide out pretty easily, but it seems firmly stuck in the hub.

They can get stuck in the hub. It may need pressing out of the hub. PLENTY of good penetrating oil and time can help. Have seen the strut removed with the hub before the shaft can be persuaded out.

The Spline is glued in the hub . It wouldn’t move on mine I ended up buying one of these off amazon to push it out of the hub and then it wasn’t easy. The locktite Is to glue it back as per the elsa win guide

That’s correct .Once you remove the hub nut attach it to the hub using the bolts that hold the wheel on.

The hub nut needs to be replaced I think it was £6
Yes I already had a replacement hub nut. Just bought the tool you suggested, so I'll give that a go when it arrives. What a palaver!

Well kids, the Hub spline extraction tool recommended by devans above arrived and after some encouragement the spline edged out slowly. Removed the old boot and applied the new one using the lubed up love cone. I'm having a cup of tea before putting it all back together.

Huge thanks from the non professional mechanic for encouragement and advice!

That is the great thing about this club. Collectively we can solve problems. Great to know you are hopefully on the final stretch now. Just remember to grease up the UV joint.

Yep all done now. I found it was easier to do the flange bolts up while the car was up on stands from underneath rather than using the long extension approach. The only thing I need to do now is adjust the headlights and it can go back in for its MOT.

Sadly in conversation with my son (I bought it for him to learn to drive in), he said he'd prefer to do it in an automatic now!
