Insurance quote joke

I was looking for better insurance quotes as I will be due to renew soon and the cheeky so and so's auto-filled the value box at £695. I am the proud owner of Mrbroons tdi90 Scotty. You would pay nearly that for the tow bar. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions/solutions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Presume this is a general insurance policy working on trade values.

If you want cover for a more reasonable figure you should be able to get an agreed value policy with a classic car type specialist?

Have a look at this post and scroll to my post which lists ways to reduce premiums.

Ticked most of those boxes already Jeetesh, like mjsrabus said I will need to go to a classic car specialist. Ps. I didn't know about higher prices at weekends. Thanks

I found the specialists even more expensive however they are more likely to value your car higher in the event of accident/claim. I wanted cheap insurance as a priority as my annual mileage on my A2 is low, theoretically lower chance of being in an accident. I consider myself a safe driver and insurance is a necessary evil and having never claimed in the 27 years of driving, I feel like I’ve spent thousands for something that feels like I’m just giving my cash away.

Hope you find yourself a good deal.

Totally agree mate, I am in my 50's, never had a claim and drive less than 5k a year. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask....Oh wait, they do have masks these days but for the wrong reason. Thanks again.

Scotty needs to be on an agreed-value policy for £3250 at the very least. Where else would you even be able to find a circa. 75k mile TDI for less than that?

Agreed, also all the extras on it. I'm starting to think I am in the wrong line of work, I should have went into insurance.

At our level of vehicle prices agreed value insurance for a ‘normal’ A2 doesn’t really make sense imo.

If you’re talking about the @Birchall grail car or the @Bargepower Unicorn then maybe but for a £3-4000 vehicle the premium on the premium doesn’t make sense to me.

If you get a market value policy you can discuss and argue the value with an insurer and of course buy back the salvage if a write off which is likely to be the case 90% of the time. As you say, it’s all the lovely things your car has that make up a lot of the value but if the worst happen the vast majority could be moved to a new vehicle as @2work did with project OEM when his old commuters cam belt let go.

In the event you’re ‘done’ by a 3rd party it doesn’t matter what your policy says, it’s their insurance who will be paying unless I’m mistaken so you’ll be arguing about value anyway?

Just wait until you reach 70,then you'll see premiums really shoot up. I'm 74 and, having recently been obtaining renewal quotes that seem ludicrously high given that I have never made a claim in 55 years of driving, I repeated the exercise after taking 20 years off my age. Every quote was at least £200 cheaper.

This isn't re-assuring me at all, I love this car but I don't have money to burn. Thanks for the replies guys, it's been very helpful.

Anyone who has passed the Institute of Advanced Motorists test might try their scheme - they've quoted me £250 and not bothered about the improvements from standard. A vast improvement from Adrian Flux who wanted £405 (note that included their policy fee of £100 plus fee of £53).

I have the fleet insured on a Footman James collectors policy. One "modern" and two+ "classics" allowed, unlimited mileage, salvage, myself and m'lady as drivers, it seems like good value.
