Insurance reductions during lockdown

Today I received an email from my insurer (Churchill) that they recognise people are doing significantly less mileage due to Covid-19.

The upshot is that you can fill in an online form, reduce the mileage (without an admin fee) and they’ll see if a refund is applicable. They won’t do this if the reduction is less than a 1000 miles but in my case it’s more so fine.

I’ve competed the online form today, we’ll see what the outcome is.

I’m quite impressed at the proactive stance, we’ll see if there’re is a marked reduction or not but worth a try.

Now....... let’s see if Aviva will do the same on my merc!

Hats off to Admiral, they're paying out a flat £25 per car insured with them. Rather happy about that considering that's where all 4 of mine are. For one of them, £25 is about 20% of the premium!

Wow, you have an annual premium of c£125 on one of your cars, thats impressively low!

You’ve achieved £100 across 4 cars so yours is the highest albeit the first. It would be good to have a sort of tally to see what people are achieving, not for bragging purposes, rather saving everyone some money.

Can you tell I’m a tight Yorkshireman....... and a banker too!

I got 2 X £25 back today from Admiral
Fantastic, your average with the same insurer as Proghound is the same. Averages probably works better as I appreciate there are some that have fleets of cars.......... I’m only jealous!

Admiral/Bell are automatically paying a flat rate of £25 per vehicle rather than calculating for each individual case. I suspect it's so they don't get floods of refund or reduction requests. We've had refunds for the 3 vehicles we have with them.

Cool, your average is the same.

If anything, this thread will show where insurers priorities lie post signing on the dotted line. Let's see what we get from different insurers.

I’m a bit impatient to seeing where I stand.

Got 75 quid back from Admiral as well. Biggest laugh is that effectively means that I've insured my TTRS for a year with 6k miles on there for 150 quid which is a joke. The A2 with very good breakdown cover and reduced to 11k is just under 300 quid - go figure :D

I never thought I would say this about a car insurance but ....well done. I am also with Admiral multicar. Insured the Audi on a pro rata basis, paid £60 and got £25 back..... 9 months insurance for £35, love it.

Im with Admiral too. One car costs £128 and the other £133. Then another £6 on top of the total to protect my NCB (which to be fair is 35 years!). So I was so chuffed to automatically get £50 back ?

I’m still awaiting to hear back from Churchill for my A2 so we’ll see when this comes back. My merc is however back (Aviva) and to reduce the mileage from 8k to 4k reduces the premium by £14.49 or 4% of the premium! Aviva ??!

Somewhat disappointing its such a low amount so I’m not going to bother reducing this one. I’ll put my 2020 mileage on my merc and keep the A2 mileage low.

Lloyd’s offer no refund due to Covid-19
Outbreak!!!

So far Admiral and associated companies are leading the way whereas Aviva not good and Lloyd’s nothing.

I’m starting to build a picture about insurers priorities. My particular disappointment with Aviva is that I’ve an impeccable 25 years no claims history since I started driving but right now distinctly feel like a number. I’m hoping Churchill will restore some faith.

You guys above are lucky, we've been on the phone just now to Esure and they are not giving out refunds. We did receive a letter today telling us about our renewal date end of this month asking for more money making it well over £300.

Using the information garnered on here when is the best time to get a quote we have just done that. Very pleased to say our renewal is £175 with 200 excess for 10,000 miles with Churchill.

Well done sir and shame on Esure.

So far the running order is:

1. Admiral and co’s - best so far
2. Churchill - the only caveat new policy, awaiting mid-term amendment for me.
3. Aviva - Nominal but not worth the effort.

Not helpful and won’t entertain:
Esure ?
Lloyd’s ?

Has anyone had any success with others? I was thinking about the specialist insurers with a higher insured amount?

I’m insured with E Sure and having just had to claim with them I’ve found them exceptionally proactive and easy to deal with tbf.

Moreover, despite ending up with a total loss, they have allowed the policy to run and continue to insure the car they wrote off.

Insurers sadly are viewed by many as being all about the cost of the premium and therefore seem to price with that in mind. Most offer little extra for loyalty so shopping around every year a few months before renewal time is usually the best bet.

I’ve heard good and bad about Esure, I was even insured with them one year however I didn't have any claims/accidents so my only contact with them was paying the annual premium up front. Indeed Aviva have been brilliant however my disappointed with their lack of flexibility with respect to mid term premium adjustment (4m into a 12m period). It’s something that will be a consideration when I’m up for renewal.

Ultimately I really wanted to understand how flexible insurers are with something that impacted everyone more or less the same.
