A2OC Donor
hope this doesn't upset Autocar Editorial or the mods. on here. I think the reference to the A2 sums up my view about the car, Audi canned it just at the wrong time.

Whether it is Iain Carson’s comment piece in today’s Guardian – Only stiff rules will drive car makers to see past the petrol – or GM’s likely sale of Hummer, there’s a point being missed across the board.

What car makers and car drivers need is a stable fuel price that does not distort the market with artificially cheap domestic electricity and gas… or artificially expensive petrol and diesel.

Most people are too busy complaining about turning timber waste into biofuel to see the wood for the trees.

If CO2 is the issue, and it’s certainly the political one, then it’s ridiculous that plug-in hybrids are suddenly viable simply because the oil price is high - it has dropped by nearly 10% over the last fortnight, incidentally.

If we all start recharging our electric vehicles at home, then the tax on and cost of electricity will rise enormously and we’ll end up buying incredibly cheap, second-hand V8 saloons.

A stable oil price would allow companies to make the correct long-term engineering investments without the suspicion that the market would change drastically and they’d have yet another expensive white elephant on their hands.

Lower drag coefficients reduce fuel consumption at cruising speeds and lower kerb weights reduce the fuel consumption in town. The Audi A2 was superbly on message, but too far ahead of the car-buying public.

Fortunately, both these design criteria improve the driving experience. They are, as it were, the writing on the wall. It’s a shame that – until now – only Mazda has been able to read it… and then sell the cars.

Sounds about right.
People want to buy into “green” but don’t want to pay, Top Gear slated the car because it cost so much. Did they want it for £7995 with cash back and 3 years free service? Its not a Citroen!!

I never understand the thinking behind the Carbon argument from the government its so inconsistent.

How congestion charge to reduce cars/CO2 in London was ever going to work, while we build a 5th terminal to help people fly on cheapo holidays or ship asparagus and apples from Peru.

Its Fraked up

it does make you wonder why Audi is still keen on the A1, rather than making a 2nd gen A2.

The A2 simply wasn't profitable for Audi but with re-engineering to reduce manufacturing costs a 'mk 2' A2 could have been a commercial success. Perhaps an Audi version of the VW up! will prove a worthy successor of the A2. The A1 is more a lifestyle car competing with MINI/FIAT 500 and others in the pipeline ( as an aside did you know the designer of the MINI and Fiat 500 is one and the same? perhaps Audi should hire him!) I imagine it will sell very well but unless it has the economy, practicality and boot space of the A2 it won't be parked on my drive!

The world has gone CO2 mad, and most observers don't understand where most of it comes from!! Transport accounts for less than 25% of all CO2 emmissions, and that include planes and trains. Power generation is top of the pops, followed by industrial processes (including the production of super green hydrogen!! er..... isn't that what fuel cell cars run on???).

The A2 is the perfect example of where cars could be if manufacturers were given the chance. The 1.2TDI (3l model) is better than any Bluemotion, Econetic, Efficient dynamics bolt-ons will ever be, since it was design to be efficient from the start.

I wait to see if BMW, Audi or VW can, in their next series of new cars, recreate the "A2" concept (low weight and low cd factor). I dread a world full of Aygo's and their equivalents. Don't get me wrong, the Aygo is a great little car, but it is just that, a "little" car. Not a family car with space, comfort and cruising ability.

Enjoy driving while it is still allowed!!! ;):D And enjoy driving the greenest car available in Europe. And please don't get me started on the Prius :mad: Rant over, and a nice way to get to 50 posts!

Cheers,

David

With recent developments in steel technology weight can be reduced without the extensive use of aluminium as in the A2. After all Mazda/Ford have produced a very light car ( by todays standards) with the new 2 and forthcoming Fiesta. The forthcoming Toyota iQ looks technically interesting.
