Is the weather affecting my fuel economy?

another +70mpg week for me and that's driving a bit faster too.
Winter is dead, long live summer :)

Winter / summer consumption

In my 1.2 Tdi my consumption figures improve dramatically in warm weather but this is because I've found that if I turn off the aircon (which is on automatically) and crack open the windows (only very slightly to avoid drag) I get about 10% better consumption.
It's a little annoying that I have to have aircon working if I want any air flow to the car interior. I always have the aircon set on "eco" but it's still adding 10% to my consumption. If I turn it off with the windows closed the windscreen mists up very quickly so having the windows open is essential. There really should be a fan only setting with no climate control at all.

Thats me driving with the Eco button turned on.
maybe I should block the radiator up with some cardboard old school style:p

I am considering partly blocking my radiator for the winter, is this advisable ?

At first I thought I had a fast acting thermostat, or stuck open one, but when I had the cam belt changed & full service a few weeks ago, I got the thermostat changed as well. So it would seem that taking quite a while to reach tempreture is quite normal in the A2s :(

I drive 7 miles to work and its not warm even at 12° like today.
on a -5 morning I cant even put the heater on as you watch the engine temp drain away.

Fuel economy

Mines gone a bit funny too and don't know why
I used to get 56 mpg doing my normal drive and since the summer have been getting 63 mpg no problem without a conscious change in style
I thought I'd put v power in at one point but it's only asda
Idid change cam belt myself just prior to this but it wasn't out by one tooth or anything
Just enjoying it at moment

I had a very similar problem in Jan this year. From memory my engine light was on as well. Not sure on the exact fault, but a Lamba Probe was replaced (not connected to the issue though) and fuel filters were cleaned/replaced. Another problem I had was engine revs were lower than normal, and at one point power seemed to be lost.

My local Audi dealer did replace my themostat gague for free, as this had broken, and was doing similar to what you say. It would never reach normal, and whenever the heating was turned on, the temp gague would plumit down to cold.

Normally though, my commute to work is about 9 miles, and after about 4, I can have heating on full with no probs, so maybe worth getting it looked at before it gets too cold, and costs could spiral!
