Is there a Sherlock on this site

Hi have an Audi a2 1.4 petrol
The car is generally fine had new battery and alternator. Naw here is the thing when it rains over night the battery dies the heavier the rain the more it dies. It’s a bit crap as I live in north wales where we do experience rain from time to time any ideas.

Is your alarm being triggered by the rain? Try turning off the ultrasonics on the alarm and see if that makes a difference.

Look inside the boot. In the battery compartment is there a lot of water, could be diluting the battery. More obvious question is have you had the correct rating battery fitted. Check with a meter the static voltage of the battery and check again with the engine running. Is your boot light coming on when it rains?

Battery and alternator fitted by a garage and he is extremely diligent. The battery bay is as dry as a bone I have checked the comfort lights go off and that I don’t leave the side lights on. I knows this might be a coincidence but I used to have an old Land Rover that seemed to do a similar thing and if could be something to do with aluminium body’s?

Still worth checking voltages. Don't think being aluminium is normally an issue with the A2 otherwise we would all have this problem. As I said try turning off the alarm interior monitor as there may be an issue with the alarm. Have you tried to trigger the alarm to see if it works correctly? Bad earth can be made worse when damp, are the under bonnet collectors correctly fitted or is the gearbox soaking when it rains. Engine earth is close by onto the starter so good place to check. Use a meter to check the lead as they do corrode inside the insulation and may look OK but are barely making contact flex the cable while you check it. May even be worth running a second earth as I have done. Take a look at this post.

@Beeno,

You really need a scan to determine if anything is being captured.
It's rare but does happen, that the alarm horn fails, so if something is triggering the alarm you might not hear it go off.
Troubleshooting battery drain isn't very difficult if you've a digital multimeter - once verified, the difficult bit is identifying what is causing the drain and fixing

If you've had a trusted workshop fit a new battery and alternator I presume this issue was occuring prior to the work, and the reason you had the work comlpleted?
Have you had the car long?
What year and model A2 have you got?
Do you have any non-factory electrical items - stereo, etc?

Cheers
Jeff

Audifan I will go with the earthing and have a scout about there. Mustang owner it’s an 04 plate no aftermarket things and the alarm does do all the singing and dancing. The battery was replaced due to age and a dead cell and the alternator wasn’t charging. But this was early to mid summer. Both have been checked by the garage a couple of weeks ago and all good.

You need to check the current drain from the battery with the car locked......…...a clamp on meter should be ok as long as it is sensitive.
You'll have to probably take out the boot floor and look through the back window...the higher the reading the more the drain, pulling fuses and checking drops in the reading will point to the item or circuit..
Voltage readings are only going to tell you the state of battery charge and if the alternator is putting charge into the system.

Agree. But you no need to look through the window :) you can press the boot lock clip on tailgate with fingers to make the car think boot is closed. You will see that boot light go off.

Unless there is a problem in the tailgate wiring loom...………...power for the boot lock?
