Judder on accelerator/clutch release, and 1200rpm noise

Hi all,

Looking for some help diagnosing 2 issues that have been getting worse the last few months since buying the car, it’s a 2005 TDI 75.

Firstly, on letting up on the accelerator either for deceleration or gear change there’s a heavy ‘judder’ from the engine which jolts the car and shows a ~50 rpm dip before returning immediately to where it was. Doesn’t change regardless of gear, rpm or speed. Would this point towards engine and/or engine mounts needing replaced?

Second is much hard to describe, and almost impossible to catch on film. If I’m sitting cruising at specifically ~1200rpm in any gear, sitting lightly part on the throttle or just come off of it there’s a distinct ‘rattle’ coming from the engine/drive train.

Any ideas/suggestions at what to look at I’d appreciate it!

I'm no expert, but I do have an 04 Tdi 75 and have read as many technical discussions of problems here as I can since I've been with A2oc. Apart from engine mounts, another possibility that is often mentioned here is the "dog bone" - this attaches the bottom of the engine/transmission to the subframe (or something like this) so if this starts to get a bit loosey goosey, can also cause engine shunt when you come off the accelerator.

That is part 7 on the following diagram :

There is apparently a contemporary VW Polo part that does exactly the same and costs a lot less than the A2 (8Z-coded) part, but I'm sure someone else will chime in with the correct information.

No idea with the second problem, but best of luck.

Agree with @Robin_Cox likely the dog bone rubber perished especially if the car has had a diesel leak. As for the second, quite a few possibilities, clutch springs, belt tensioner, water pump bearing, alternator clutch even catalyst breaking down inside. Check what you can get at easiest first, but start with all the mounts especially the pendulum mount ( dog bone ). May not be a finite list but at least you have somewhere to start.

Cheers guys, sounds like it’s more or less what I was thinking...looks like September is going to be a pricey month! I’ll start having a search for the compatible parts. The rattle looks like it’s going to be a long game!

Perfect so you're only changing the engine/transmission mounting bracket at the end for the existing, there's no changes to the subframe mount side? hell of a price difference!
