Jumping out of gear and steering vibration.

My first journey with my new tdi isn't making me feel like this is the keeper it was meaning be... we've only done 200 miles together, a new temperature sensor this morning sorted the gauge not moving. The car has jumped out of 5th gear about 10 times today, some when trying to engage the gear, some when just driving along the motorway, some in cruise control, is this a faulty gearbox or just some adjustments? It has a median clutch apparently. I could have limped home, but now the clunk clunk clunk as I cornered and accelerated has turned into a very loose feeling steering and alot of vibrations, like when you have a flat tyre at speed. Is this likely the cv joint breaking up? Waiting for the RAC now for a lift. On a brighter note, collected my new Audi roof box today....

You don't buy keepers, you make them keepers ;)

Could be worth checking engine mounts, particularly on the nearside gearbox side and dog bone rear mount.if they are about done it could explain the vibrations, but not sure if that would be why it's jumping out of gear though

At the risk of talking out my posterior it may be worth you, or your tame mechanic, checking and adjusting the gearstick-to-box cables as a first step:

Cheers I'll give it a go tomorrow, Rac suspect 5th gear synchro or gearbox bearings might be the issue as its jumping out of gear when trying to accelerate on the motorway. Towtruck home tonight....

That is a lovely roofbox!!I have a Thule winging its way to me soon. If it looks half as smart as yours I'll be made up
I got it off eBay, Audi parts. They seem to sell original parts at half price, good to deal with, collected from an Audi dealership.

I have the same with my lupo sdi wont stay in 5th, have gear box out and on bench, removed end plate on box 5th is behind the plate, when I pulled the gears off the needle bearing case was long gone just a few rollers, its chewed up two gear wheels, have found transmission parts online near Liverpool have all the parts, it may be tight to get at in place but worth a look.

My old tdi did exactly the same nod, replaced the cables and tower, it never did it again...much cheaper than a replacement box, but, if it is the box, at least you know the cables are new and will be good for another few years.

thanks for the advice, its now jumping out of 4th too, and 3rd gear is getting harder to engage so somethings getting worse. i'll take a look at the easy things next weekend. do you know if the gear cables are interchangeable between petrol and diesel?? i took them off the fsi i broke and they were good. cheers

I think they are different, but not 100% sure to be honest. Having never broken a tdi (good advert as to how strong they are) I wouldn't be able to answer that. I am sure someone will be along soon to answer the question for you though Nod, maybe A2steve could answer that one for you?

Hi Andy I've been looking at the gearbox briefly today and the tower bearing has clearly gone, it's very loose and wobbly, as well as the white slider being loose fit too. Did to get your replacement tower from Audi? Cheers nod.

Yes pal, got it from Audi, I'm pretty sure it was about £90, may be worth asking Tom from Crewe for a quote.
