Just been quoted £314 to change the thermostat on my 75Tdi

Pugliese

So two questions, as searching the forum I could not find the answers.

Is there a how do guide on how to change the thermostat and sensor?

Car struggles to reach 90 (as shown on temp gauge, usually get to max 75 in about 15 mins), but cabin heats within a couple of mins (a/c fitted), so does it cause damage to the engine running at a lower temp?

Thanks

Watch this guy, he does it ok
Not sure all his methods are correct though, but you get the idea.

I heard a tip on the thermostat housing lower bolt. Tie a piece of cotton around it, so when you drop it it's easily retrieved. And the plastic circlip on the sensor can be a right tinker apparently.

It's a bit of a fiddly job and make sure you buy a VW/Audi thermostat, I did it twice because of using an aftermarket one

Hi

It could be the temperature sender or and the thermostat. Best to change both while coolants dropped out perhaps?
Thermostat can be bought on fleabay for around £30 genuine, temp senders range form £5-25, Hella is good make OEM is also preferred.
Yes the ECU reaads the coolant sensor reaading and uses that to help timing and fuel until engine reaches 90 on the needle. Until then you will be running sub optimal.
Ive just drilled my thermostat for reasons best not gone into, now the car will run at 60 deg max, the engine drives faster and richer on fuel.

Thermostat I have changed 5 times in one week so the last one took me about 20 mins max, you do need a 5mm hex allen key or 10mm socket. The lower bolt you need a ratchet spanner 1/4 drive adaptor and a a shallow 10mm socket to get it going or a good ball end 5mm hex allen. Pipe clips need to be removed on the charge pipe across the front and good to remove the dipstick and guide tube for access.

Thank you so much, so they are taking the p with the price quoted.

Interesting about the engine performance, so in reality if you run the engine cooler, mpg will suffer a bit but performance can be enhanced. Maybe I'll leave it for now until it the weather improves.

With prices like the one you were quoted it just seems like they don't really want the work. But will milk it for the trouble it takes.
