Just bought my first A2

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd say a quick 'hi' before I start spamming your maintenance section with questions! :)

I've just bought my first A2, a 2000 1.4 petrol SE in a delightful dark metallic green (anyone know what that's called?) - it was pretty cheap, but also a bit broken. It needs quite a bit of love, but I'm looking forward to getting it back to its former glory.

There are loads of things I need to ask (it really does need lots fixing), but four on my mind right now are...
  • What is the right grade oil for this engine? Eurocarparts seems to offer a choice, and I don't have a handbook for the car.
  • Where does the oil filter live? I can't see it.
  • What is the best manual to get? I know there is no Haynes one - any chance of a recommendation?
  • Where oh where can I find a set of alloy wheel centre caps that won't require a mortgage? I see quite reasonably priced sets on eBay, but they're described as being 147mm diameter, and my wheels would need 140mm diameter caps. The two broken ones that came with the car have a part number of 8Z0.601.165 B
Thanks in advance - I'm so glad this site exists!

Welcome, you certainly seem to have the bug!
It may be best to put an additional post in the "Wanted" section of this forum.
If you have not already signed up for "Marketplace" then I suggest you do so, to take advantage of all the delectable for sale items! There is a one off fee of £2, but its not the "Donate" tab.
There is a mountain of info available but searching is best done via Google. Start with A2oc.net followed by whatever you're looking for. Enjoy the forum, and don't be afraid to ask. We all started somewhere, and most are still learning!
By the way, your car is probably Pine Green.

Pearlescent Pine Green is the full name, were the 2 center caps actually fitted to the wheels, if not check the once that are for the correct part number.

My Googling of that part number comes up with the standard chromed-edge centre caps for the six-spoke 16" SE wheels. Pictures here, back and front to confirm the part number.

In which case I'm not seeing any difference between those and 8Z0601165F which are fitted to my car and also measure 140mm. I think the one in the photo might be broken since it doesn't appears have any clips/ring to hold it in place, which the F variant certainly does.

They weren't fitted, no, but I put that down to an absence of bits on the back that might hold them in place. They are the right diameter though, so I'm assuming they're the originals.

Yup - those in the picture look identical to what I have with the car, up to and including a mysterious lack of clips.

There should be no shortage of 8Z0601165F to replace them then. As has been said elsewhere, if you get cheap used ones with corroded outer rings, you can remove these to produce a smarter and durable version which is simply grey all over.

Here is my 1.4 Pine Green SE with hub center caps.

Ahhhhhh - that looks really nice. So far I'm having zero luck on the wheel centres front. £108 for four is the "cheapest" I've seen. It genuinely looks like it'd bee cheaper overall to buy a complete set of 16" Audi wheels from something else (that either have their centre caps or don't ned them), and then sell my wheels and tyres. Either that or just get used to how they look without the caps, I suppose!

If you want a laugh ring Audi for a price on part number 8ZO 601 165.... £45 each!

Have you looked at the Market on here? You may need to upgrade your account to do so. Click on your username in the black menu bar, select Account Upgrades, there's only the one, it has a £2 one-time fee via PayPal and you're done. You can put up a Wanted ad for this style of wheel centres if you can't find any for sale.

Glad we've managed to get you a you solution for your fuse box cover in your Wanted ad.

In terms of the wheel-centres, I've just had a look through my parts hoard. I've come up with four spares that have all their clips and retaining rings on the back, but the corrosion of their chrome outer rings varies between 'quite advanced' and 'very advanced'. These would be suitable for removing the chrome altogether as mentioned above. If you'd be interested, PM me - I can send you a picture.

I understand that there is an extreme shortage of these centrecaps (original Audi ones not Chinese copies which may not fit properly) and there are only a handful left in the UK.

They are certainly very scarce new, no wonder the price has shot up recently from what the OP was quoted. Bet they go NLA soon.

For the fuse box cover @depronman prints new 3D pivots. You just cut the skinny old ones off and superglue them on. Much better than original!
