..but it feels like I've missed the party and the chairs are going up on the tables :(

are many people still active here ? - I know it's quite an 'unpopular' car, purely in the sense of the numbers sold - but this seems to be the most active A2 forum of the few I've found.

because it's an 'other halves' car perhaps ?

I do have a question anyway - has anyone retrofitted foglights ? - The salesman seemed to think that they were on CANbus - which surprised me to say the least for such a simple unit. I can sort of understand though, if the whole loom uses CANbus then it follows that even simple on/off items would have to be - I've noticed a delay when switching on the headlights of our A4, so I think they are - so I wouldn't be too surprised.

Anyway - got a great deal on a new one, bought at used price despite only having 13 miles on it - spec'd at over 19k (even at the current lower prices), but got it for 15 - I think the timing was just right, as this was a dealer ordered car (even had Tracker as well as all the options) and as production has recently stopped they don't need it anymore and put it up for sale - it only arrived at the dealers yesterday!

quite pleased about it, so forgive the monologue - hello to all :)

Hi to the quiet little club smaller than other clubs but a good bunch in all sounds like a nice one you had welcome to the club

Welcome - Think you will find this the most informative forum on the net. Have taken advice many times from here and the search feature may just about be able to answer all your queries.

As for the car it has been the most fun I've ever had and when you consider I started with an Audi Cab, then an A4 and now an A2 its beyond belief that I've had this car the longest time of any car I've ever owned. Enjoy

We had one for a day on a test drive - as many other people have mentioned, I noticed the noisy engine, and intrusive position of the A pillars - also the gearchange is awful compared to the A4, and the lower smaller capacity engine is very noticeable - although only a 1/4 smaller than the A4 (we have the 130ps 1.9 tdi), the lack of a 6th gear and lower power made it seem quite frenetic. Handbrake also seemed to need excessive travel - that is probably due in part to the lack of rear discs, and the drums having to perform two functions. The oscillating wind noise with the windows down I can see would start to irritate quite soon.

however, it's spades more entertaining! - I soon got to like the growl and the chuckability, and by the time I got it home for the other half to take over I was quite fond of it already, despite being a little disappointed by illusion of 'cheapness' - but I realise that's just because I've compared it to a much bigger Audi really and picked up on how different it is. Any small car has trouble conveying the impression of solidity I'm sure.

It still has a surprisingly big car feel from the front as well - after getting out and looking back, the tardis effect is quite noticable, as I'm sure other people have noticed many times :)

I hope it is a car which will become a long term buy - helped by it's rarity and the fact it's quite unique in it's sector, and no sucessor for at least 2 years if the Autocar report is anything to go by - and they'll no longer be aluminium. I did joke that when we're done with it we could take it down the recyling skip for cans and just tip it in there :D

I bet that price breaks down to £1,400 labour given the way they are built! I'm due for a cam belt change soon and dreading the price as I anticipate most of the front end will need to be taken off!

well, got it yesterday.

very pleased overall - gearchange is still poor, though a little better than the demo car, and those A pillars do take some getting used to. A that darn noise you get with the windows down affects the rears just the same - it's like a small helicopter following you everywhere. The engine in this one is a bit quieter too - still instrusive when you peddle it faster, but when cruising I don't really notice at all - especially with the bose turned up :) - trouble is now I miss it on the A4!

haven't had a chance to do a proper check - but 55mpg so far during a 50 mile round trip, not sparing the right foot (I always ran my petrol engines in like this and always got great results - so far the A4 has used no oil in 6k miles, so it seems to work for diesels just as well) - 60 mpg should be easy with a lighter foot (it's the 75ps version by the way, not the 90)

no cruise control light on the dash though when it's on, and the DIS only has one trip memory.

it also has a slotted grill (the service flap bit), most A2s I've seen have the flat shiny one - was this changed recently ?

will get a couple pics up, just in case you haven't already seen enough A2s :D

The service flap changed to the slotted grill during 2003.
We drive our 75ps version (superchipped to 100+ps) very 'spiritedly' and over the last 10,000 miles have averaged over 60mgp - but we do live in a rural area with no traffic jams!

We are about to change the TT to a second A2 TDi - thats how much we love he A2!!!!

I'm starting to get a little worried, with all this talk of mpg figures.
We have a 90ps TDi Sport and I'm only averaging 48.2. I keep the climate on "econ" most of the time as well.

Is this particularly bad?

Five,

It depends on your daily drive to be honest. If you commute through heavy traffic for most of the journey, then high 40's to low 50's is quite normal. The best way to check is to do a trial on a long journey, keeping to speed limits etc. I used to get 55-59mpg on a long 60mph drive.

On the A/C front, I wouldn't keep it on econ too much, as this will allow bacteria to form on the evaporator and then cause it to smell when you turn the A/C back on again.
