That was possibly Castle Red - a metallic brown colour.
We looked at this colour when speccing our first A2 and dismissed it as it reminded me of 'Allegro brown' when we saw it on the small sample plate in the showroom - but to see it in the flesh on an A2, it looks totally different and I love it.

There is one in Tunbridge Wells but I guess it is not the one you saw!

There can't be to many about as this is the only one I have seen.

Hi tiny

DVLA stats to Sept 05 below. Bear in mind I think it is the dealer that defines the colour and some may be colour blind or make wrong assumptions. For example, my blue A2 looks almost silver under some light conditions. As Rob says, it might well be a red one. But if it is really brown then there were only 3 in the UK at that time.

For some reason the image is being clipped at the bottom. The total is cut off. It's 18,360

Milly, a member on this site has one, and yes the name for this colour is Castle Red. It does look good too.

Sorry it's Millie, quickly grovels an apology. It's a 2003 1,6 fsi. Nice looking car. There's also a well specced 1,4 diesel in castle red with a chip fitted by the Audi dealer that I nearly bought before the the one I did. Does anyone know where that car is now? It was sold through audi in Winchester.

I don't pretend to understand how the DVLA classify colours. Is brown also bronze and what is mauve? And what is my a2 silver lilac classed as? Purple?

My colour is beautiful! But it wasn't me you saw as I'm in Bucks now! I know of one other on this site but don't know their name. It is truly rare, I haven't seen another on the roads although there are plenty of A2s around here in Bucks. I can only describe it as chocolate/claret, not red as you would imagine. I'm amazed by the fact there are only 3 according to DVLA! Many thanks for compliments on my A2.

Green on brown

hi
I once got a parking ticket in Durham and the nice chap put my car colour down as brown. however it is actually fern green but in certain light it looks:confused: brown. dicko

It's an error on behalf of the registering dealer to mark the car as 'brown' (3 error's it would appear...)

There are other errors as well in the DVLA data, particularly on engine size - some really peculiar sizes. It just shows that they have no basic data validation and the people keying it in couldn't care less.

In this day and age it beats me why they can't use a more robust system, after all, supermarkets can trace food back to manufacturers and they in turn back to farms. Given that there a just a handful of motor manufacturers and all cars have a unique chassis no. then I don't see why the manufacturer's documentation to the dealers shouldn't come with a peel off bar code which they stick on the initial reg. docs. DVLA then scan the bar code and link through to the manufacturer to get the full details.
