Knowledge on the Volkswagen transporter 5

You need to ring Trading standards first before you do anything else and advise them of the faults and they will give you a case reference number and advise you of your rights , which is basically a vehicle not fit for purpose, then go after the sellor as he is a trader knowing your rights, you can force them to repair faults , be warned thow they may just fix as cheaply as possible, bodge stuff up so check carefully if they do repairs that they are suffiiant and correctly repaired , or youl be intitled to a full refund, advise the sellor trading standards are involved and he will bend over backwards to make you happy as he knows this means trouble for him if they do get fully involved, if no joy from the sellor as his small print says sold as seen which means nout in the eyes of the law and trading standards go back to trading standards as they will get more involved if the sellor wont fix the problems or give you a full refund

Thanks for the info, I'll get in touch with trading standards tomorrow. I don't want to get rid of the van because it is a nice looking van, I can fix it all my self but for what Iv paid for it it will cost a lot more! It has a recent invoice for cambelt and various other things and an new mot, surly they would have spotted these faults!

Well push for money back in lue of the faults, I did this with a dealer last yr after i bought a car and had trading standards involved it took some haggling with the sellor but i adventually got half my money back which i was more than happy with but i had to argue the toss with the dealer for a hour or so untill he turned over all the money as i stood my ground with what i wanted untill he kept raising what he would offer me , but i knew i had trading standards on my side so i did not back down until i got what i wanted ..

Nothing from them :( Iv looked at the van over the weekend and it's a power steering leak, I topped it as it was near empty and it was silent, tho it is still leaking. I don't want to give the van back, Iv stripped the inside over the weekend and it is a pretty solid van. The problems are the aircon, power steering leak and gap at the back of the van (I'll fix that myself then I'll know it's done properly!) and the asr button. I'll try and get in touch with him and see if he is prepared to refund me the repair costs or repair it himself. If not I'll slate them on the vw forums and put it down to my own fault. Now Iv stopped worrying so much it's not a bad van. I was after a project anyway I'm just gutted what Iv paid for this with its problems! I probably wouldn't have notice the leak there but the rest I could have spotted if I didn't rush in to the buy!

Good news at the moment :) Iv been in touch with the garage and they have said that they are going to get in touch with a friends that is nearer to me and have them look at the van and then pay them to do the work :) so hopefully it will all be ok :)

Mate they have to give you a three month warranty unless they sell the vehicle as a trade sale or parts or non runner.

If they are a company it won't cost them much to sort those problems and better for there reputation too.

Hope you get it all sorted soon and will keep my eye open for it in the future when down your way

That is really good news and probably the best outcome for you.

My boys are enjoying our project and it's nearly ready for wiring and insulating :)

Looking good mate, don't ask me why but I would be tempted to polish that paint, even though I know it will be covered up.

Your helpers look like they are enjoying it.

I won't ask you why you would polish a floor that is never going to be seen, but that is because I know that some people really would do this and that is to be admired.

But to me it looks spotless as it is and I am a lazy sod, so I would cover it up as it is. But hats off to you Dicky, that is a standard that I can only aspire to.

My boys are really excited to turn it in to a camper :) to be honest I'm tempted too! I borderline did really I used quick shine wax spray :)

I'll keep you all updated with pics as long as no one minds seeing as it's not an a2!

Got all but the floor insulated now :)

Tha wall lining carpet is here and Iv cut the old wood to a better size before I wrap that in the carpet too :)

All that has to go back in the van! :)

It's getting there :) I used 3 layers, it had loft insulation in it already so I took that out and put the aluminium bubble foil against the outer panels then put the loft insulation back then put foil over the top again :) it is noticeably warmer in the van now! And quieter!

Sorry to ask questions about a non a2 vehicle on here but this club is always very helpful and easier for me to use than the vw forums! I hope nobody minds :(

Is it normal for inter cooler pipes to have oil in them? Also what could cause the van to beep 3 times on start up? I thought that's usually a warning?
And last Iv had the steering rack replaced but now the steering feels notchy when turning! Any ideas what that could be?

Thanks for any help

Scott

Hi Scott,

Since you posted this in the correct section (Carpark) you are perfectly ok to post such questions.

Lots of us appreciate many types of cars and the VW Transporter is great (in my opinion).

So please go ahead, no need to worry and we are glad you realise that this is a great little club we have here.

A bit of progress with the project :)

I bought factory fit ply lining kit for the walls

Than I wrapped them in carpet

Then I wrapped the inside of the van

Then fixed the ply kit over the top

Then the factory fit 12mm thick floor was delivered :) I've just lay it in for now because there is still more to do

I havnt wrapped the drivers side yet because I'm waiting for the panel beater at work to repair the back of the van with me 1st, the floor will soon be fixed properly and have some sort of vinyle designer on it, I havnt decided what I want yet, then the next thing I'll be buying is the rock n roll bed seat :) slowly we are getting there
