Knowledge on the Volkswagen transporter 5

Nice work Scott. I have taken the liberty of increasing the picture size in your last post to make it easier for members to admire your handy work.

Good to see that after your initial problems, there is a happy ending.

Thank you for increasing the size.
I prefer to do it my self because my children are helping out when they can, it's all fun we can't wait until it's done! It feels a bit less of a tin can now! :)

Looking brilliant. This post is really interesting and a good diversion from A2s.

Done half of the other side over the weekend, I didn't go the full length because as Iv mentioned the back of the van need to be repaired at work (next weekend :)) and also I was a foot short of a full length of carpet! So by joining the carpet I can finish it with other off cuts I have. The joins should look ok but it doesn't matter as there will at some point be a kitchen unit there.

So here it is :)

I'm really enjoying the van now it's starting to take shape! I heard the funniest thing the other day tho... My girlfriend said once we have the seat bed in the back we should sell the a2!!!! NEVER!!!!!!!!!

Would anyone know how to check if the auto headlight kits on eBay would fit my t5? Iv messaged a couple of sellers but they are really not helpful. Also can any of the a2 cruise control fitters fit a kit to the t5?

Hi,

the T5 uses the VW Polo 6Q0 headlight switch so if you see a kit that works in a similarly aged Polo it will also work in the T5.

So I broke my phone whilst go carting a month a go and lost all pictures of my progress on the van! Anyway since then I have repaired the back of the van at work where it had been hit up the back, I pulled it out and now the tail gate lines up nicely and there is no more gap between the rubber and tailgate! i have also finished carpeting and insulating the walls and have baught a rockn roll bed :)

image.jpg
All I have to do is upholster it at some point
Really looking forward to upholstering it and sleeping in it! Still loads to do and lots of small bits I have done so just a quick update of my progress

Thanks for looking :)

I got bought my auto headlight kit for Father's Day :) love it in the a2 so had to have it on the van!

The box seems to be smaller than the box that comes with the a2's kit.

Is there any cruise control fitting a2 members that think/know they could fit cruise to my van? It's something I want to get very soon!

My latest pictures of work on the camper

I have changed the wheels! I've always liked the steel wheels and I want to put all terrain tyres on them so I managed to do a straight swap for the 20" Range Rover wheels that come on the van!

image.png
The van drive so much better on these, they are 17" banded steels. Soon the will be refurbished in gloss black with the all terrain tyres on! The old wheels put the speedo out as well! At 70mph on the speedo I was actually doing 78 according to the sat nav!

We have had a couple of nice (rough) nights in the van so far :)

I've also lay down a vinyl floor

This week the kitchen/ storage unit will be delivered and also the tail gate blackout curtain kit :)

Looks really good mate I have always liked those wheels and even better if banded and nice to have your speedo back to normal. Floor looks good and I love that red it's all coming together nicely

Really pleased with how it's coming together! Even more so as I've done it all my self, the the unit needs paint or wrapping and a fridge and sink fitted to it so still lots to do! But now I need to spend a bit of money on my a2 as the mot is due and I've neglected it the last 7 months :( but tho it has an injector going and needs a service it still drives so nice when I occasionally drive it!!

A pic of how it began

So a bit more progress with the van, I very reluctantly sold the a2 a month ago now and still wish I hadn't but I was hardly using it and it was park on the road so I was always worrying about it :( most of the money went into the van tho and I now the sink, fridge and electric hook up powere management system :) none of it is wired up yet but iv fit it all in place, I still need the heater, leisure battery and compact sub and amp before I can wire every up as I want to do it all together.

So here is how it's looking

Apart from the pop top roof it's very nearly a fully functional camper, all I need is to upholster the rocknroll bed, get the leisure battery the heater wire it all in and paint the unit (if spoke to the painter about having it sprayed at work)

But..... iv had a bad bit of luck with the van I need any bit of help and advice I can get! I put the van in for its mot and it failed on two anti roll bar drop links (iv now replaced them) and the failed it as there is no abs light present, they said they can send the clocks off but would cost me from £45-£275 so I took the clocks apart at work and found someone had stuck blue yak over the abs, traction control and handbreak light! Now I've removed it I have a flashing handbreak light and the abs and traction control light is constantly on! Doing a scan isn't really helpful it's saying missing message in abs control module and fault with the engine control module. Looking online and YouTube it may be the abs control module and a new unit is £800! This makes sense as they have gone to some effort to hide the lights! This has come at a real bad time as Christmas is near and iv sold the a2! A bit like karma from my old a2 :(
Any help on the issue will be much appreciated.
Thanks for looking

Good evening Scott, I'm sorry to hear about your van failing it's MOT. Do you have a part number for the abs control module?, I would be more than happy to help you in your search.

Kindest Regards
Joe

Hi joe, no I don't know the part number but iv seen a new one on eBay and I can get parts at trade price.
Here are the faults tho....

Maybe someone can make some sense of this :(

Didn't you buy this from a dealer? Did they have it MOT'd if so it was a moody one as this should have been picked up then.

I would be going back to the dealer who you bought it from, warranty or not they sold the vehicle with a serious fault of abs not working and a moody bodge to hide the lights

I bought the van from a backstreet sort of garage who arranged finance for me, Iv put this experience down to my own fault for rushing into it and not looking in to the van properly! As Iv gone so far with the project now I can't be bothered with the hassle with the garage, and it's not a good idea for me to go back there! I've managed to buy a used control module on eBay for £300 :( vw wanted £1200 new :( now I just have to fit it.

Anyway I thought I'd update anyone interested and ask for a bit of help

Iv got a bit further with it:)
IMG_2073.jpg
I've installed temporarily the split charge relay, I'll make it neater when I build a box around it
IMG_2265.jpg
I have also had the steels banded, painted black and I've fitted all terrain tyres:)

Now the help I need is with wiring this up, where does the earth go to? Is it the bolt with the nuts on on the bottom right of the back? I can't seem to find a diagram that shows me
IMG_2271.PNG
IMG_2272.PNG

Thanks for your help and interest

Hi, thanks Iv read this before and the diagram is faded so hard to see properly, I just can't work out what to connect an earth too, I can't see anything that tells me :(
