Lights

I do alot of my driving in the dark, especially at this time of year when the days are shorter.

I find both the dipped beam, and main beam to be nothing short of abysmal, meaning concentration levels need to be at maximum at all times, this can prove tricky at five thirty in the morning.

Does everyone else have similar problems? and does changing the bulbs make any difference?

I find this very poor on a relativley modern car, my dog walking car (an old P-reg Fiesta) has far better lighting.

Cheers Phil.

I haven't noticed any problem with my lights, perhaps you have a problem. There is certainly a fitting guide available to help you fit new bulbs, and the web is full of goodie bulbs. I wonder if you have an earthing problem. Have you compared it side by side with another A2? That should determine whether you have a problem.

Does the dog walk in front or behind the P reg Fiesta? P reg? dog? you can't make it up.

I find my lights ok too better than my old peugeot. do you have the level adjustment set correctly. I have mine set to max height.

When I took delivery of my new A2, the firt thing that I did was to change the dip beam bulbs to Osram silverstar which give 50% more light, and the main beam which give 30% more light, to the originals.

Metalic Silver, 1.4 TDI (90), SE, DIS, Sport Seats, Winter Pack, Head Light Washers, Open Sky, Air Con, Tow Bar, Acoustic Parking, Auto Dim Mirror.

My sister in law has an A2, so will compare with hers. Otherwise will be investing in some new bulbs.

BTW The dog drives the car, me and the missus sit in the boot.

:)

Thanks Phil.

I never drive with my foglights on, unless its foggy.

All fog lights do is "fill in" the part of the main beam close to the car which the headlights don`t light because they are:

A: Mounted Higher, and
B: Designed to light the road ahead not the road close to the car.

I still find both dipped and main beam to be sub standard, maybe the previous owner used cheap bulbs as replacements. New bulbs are imminent.

Not had chance to compare with another A2 yet though. Although i don`t think i have an earthing problem as all my electrics are fine.

Thanks Phil.

I also fitted Osram Silverstar bulbs and found them to give further and clearer vision than the OEM bulbs.

try the Phillips +50% I use them & they make a big difference, also have your dealer check the alignment, they could be too low or set too much to the left

A2 TDI Sport Leather & Alcantara, climate control, Bose, cruise control, full electric glass, front fogs, sony HD5

I also have found my lights to be bordering on the dangerous on dark roads. My old polo was much better at lighting the road ahead. I asked them to look at them in the service, but they said they were ok.... I wasn't sure if they were badly aligned, as they are bright enough, just too dipped (both dipped and full).
Good to hear i'm not the only one...

What bulbs do I need for main and dipped beams? I have been told H7, that's OK and either H1 or H3. The handbook is no help, and various web sites contradict each other.

H7 for the dipped beam, H1 for the main beam.
That is, if my English serves me to translate 'main' and 'dipped'.
Dipped is what you can get with the rotary knob on the dash. Main is what you get when you push the indicator stalk backwards (on LHD cars at least).

The handbook doesn't tell you because you're not supposed to do it yourself ;)

I changed my bulbs recently and they were H7 and H3's, contrary to the forum fitting guide and some of the bulb web sites. On my 2001 car the headlight housings have a yellow sticker on the top surface which can just be seen from inside the engine bay. The bulb types are printed down the edge of the sticker in rather small lettering. I found this while removing the headlight housings to change the bulbs!

Cheers Spike

Do I assume H3 for 2001 and H1 for later? What's the difference? The H3 seems to have a wire attached, and the H1 not. Or I will have to look for the yellow sticker. Why is specifying the correct bulb by Audi such a secret? I suppose it's so the dealer gets the job, sad really.
I bought some H7 and H1 as spares, now it looks as if I need H3, unless you know different.

I am amazed.
The lights on my 2001 A2 were one of its (many) positive features.
Night time driving was never a problem in dark or street lit areas.
Are they adjusted properly?
I know there were some problems with bulbs not seating correctly and therefore affecting beam spread.
