limp mode after aggressive acceleration

I have ordered a cable and will download the VCDS Lite this evening to see how I am able to install it on my netbook.

Well, that was easier than I thought VCDS Lite installs and runs fine under wine on linux.
I think that the next step - getting wine to recognise the USB cable as a serial port may be more involved, but it should be possible. Now I am just waiting for delivery of the cable...

Why are you trying to get the USB port recognised as a serial port? Cant you just select it as the port in VCDS settings? If so then VCDS will take care of it.

Vcds only recognises serial so usb serial emulation has to be setup so that wine can present the ports as serial...from what I understand at least

Yup and I run it on windows 7 but OP is running linux and uses wine which allows running of windows apps on unix / posix kit

OK, I have got the cable. Linux recognised it as a usb/serial device and set up /dev/ttyS0 for it. Wine links /dev/ttyS0 to com1 in ~/.wine/dosdevices. Running VSDS-Lite and selecting com1 in options and clicking on the test button gives Port Status: OK Interface: Not found so VCDS-Lite seems to recognise that com1 is available. The problem is when taking the netbook out to the car and plugging it in the test button still reports Port Status: OK Interface: Not found.

I know that I am doing this the hard way, but I don't have a windows laptop available and loathe to install windows onto the netbook just for this.

Are there any known good settings for connecting to the A2 other than the defaults in VSDS-Lite options window?

You could try altering the baud rate, some interfaces need a lower setting to allow them to be detected by VCDS.

The baud rate default is 0 I tried 9600 as that is a standard that I know of but that did not work.
And yes, I turned on the ignition and red led illuminated on the OBD plug - it always is illuminated even when not connected to the car.

What about downloading the full version to see if that works? Do not know how far you will get before it needs the genuine cable, may be worth a try. I have only ever used full VCDS.

Got it...
the mention of USB reminded me that linux also set up /dev/ttyUSB0 so I linked that to com1 instead and that worked, it now connects. :D

Not ideal, but at least it seems to work the next step is to register I suppose...

Does anyone see anything useful in the output above?

Fault code 17965 relates to overboost which is leading to limp mode:

I'd suggest checking the hoses that connect to the N75 valve as a starting point.
Thanks, I will, once I know where to look...
Odd that it might have had a overboost fault while having a leaky intercooler though?

I will have another go with the VCDS-Lite tomorrow to see if I can Read Fault Codes as the above was from an AutoScan.

Just copy each fault, ie "19463 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): No Signal," and paste into Google. More info than you can shake the proverbial stick at! Good hunting. Mac.
