Picked up our 9700K A2 a couple of weeks ago, and the sales chap assured us that a service would be carried out before collection...and the service period/mileage would be reset. Sure enough the service book is stamped and the Longlife box checked.

So why is it that when I press the button for the service mileage check does it read that the service is due in 9000 miles or so? :(

When the service is done and the indicator reset, your cars computer must 'adjust' itself to the new oil etc, get a feel for how you are driving, take a step back and review the situation!

Therefore, it will show a low service interval and providing you drive nicely, the interval will slowly climb. Drive like a loony and the service level will stay at 9000 or even drop.

Give it time my friend, give it time, it is a living machine....

Hi Dan, it is normal for the "service due in" figure to be relatively low after being reset after a service. If yours is on the variable service regime then this figure will go up with time as the computer recalculates.

The "service due" calculation depends on many variables.I take it yours is the 1.4 petrol, therefore you should get up to 19,000 miles or 2 years before a service is required. However, with such variables as number of cold starts, short/long journeys, town/motorway journeys, your driving style, this figure could be reduced. What sort of milage do you do per annum?

Keep an eye on the "service due" indicator over the next few weeks and it should go up.

Hope this helps

Ours read 9500 miles the day it was serviced, a week later it reads 13500 miles - just give it time.

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield silver ? ? ?

Postscript - 24th May and it now reads 16,800!

Thanks guys - hadn't been made aware about the variable service thing until I read about it today...the sales guy did not make me aware of that. When I quizzed him about the service intervals he simply said "every 20k or 2 years, whichever is first" - so naturally I expected the service interval on the computer to be reading 19k+. Bloody dealers.

Oil quality sensor eh? Crikey I'm used to just taking a peek at the dipstick :D

Right after a service - be it Fixed Interval or Variable - the service indicator will show 9000 mi to next service. It's only after 300 mi (at the first 'recalculation' ) that you will see the numbers starting to rise.

Yep, and it has been known to go wrong, so if you have any problems with the VSI, suggest it to the dealer in case they don't know!!!

I've got a March 2003 A2 1.4SE and only use it really for short trips to and from the station and the odd 300 miles round-trip. It's only done 5,000 miles and the Service indicator has come. I phoned my Audi dealer and they quoted me £254 for essentially and oil change and filter! They said I didn't have to get the service but they would recommend it. Has anyone driven for long after the service indicator has shown? Can it do any damage if I continue to drive for another 3,000 or so? The Audi dealer didn't think it would do much harm but could'nt officially say! What do you guys think? Any tips appreciated!

I think this is a strange response from a dealer. They don't know the history of your journeys-lots of short trips will put a lot of strain on the engine-how can they tell without hooking it up to the VAG?

Also, for warranty you should stick with Audi's law-if you skip a service for a while and something goes wrong, the dealer will only be too happy to point out your warranty is invalid and you will have to pay for repairs.

And welcome to the forum!

Crossie - go for fixed service intervals which mean a service every 10,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first. Variable servicing is no good for cars covering low mileages.

Runboy and Daveyjp - Thanks for your advice...I think I'll bite the bullet and book it in for a service and shift to fixed servicing!!

I believe the fixed inspection service has to be carried out every 12 months or 10000 miles, not 2 years as stated, am I correct?
