looking to buy our 1st a2

hi guys

i have like the a2 for some time, and have decided as the mrs 1st car we wil get her an a2 as she loves it also,we love the small car style but decent interior space (boot size is bigger than a focus) and a btter looking and feeling interior than the other small cars,

now i also love cars with good mpg!

we have 2 children,

and currently also have a 5 door honda hrv 4x4,

i previosuly had a passat tdi and love tdi's and could clear over 45 mpg in that with my driving style.

Now we are on a tight budget! im also working a 2nd full time evening job to save for the a2, thats dedication!

we currently have £2500, and looking at the used cheaper models, high miles dont scare me so long as its been looked after as it will be looked after with us as im very anal about maintainance (i work for fords complaints so daily hear what happens when you dont look after your car)

just looking for general tips and advise,

we aim to spend about £3500-£4000

would you gurus be confident in getting a cared for a2 for that price range?

im also unsure whether to save nore and grab a tdi, or go for a petrol?

i have read the tdi performs better and seems more fun due to the torque, also the mpg is very tempting,

what are you petrol guys getting out of a tank? (ps what is the tank size?)

your comments and feedback is welcomed

Hello!

Hello!

I very recently purchased an A2, wish I am delighted with.

If I may put forward a few suggestions, I would like to offer you the following:

I did a lot of research AND a lot of looking. As far as the kind of A2, I would certainly recommend the tdi; they're really nippy and can certainly hold their own either in the town or on the motorway. You also get the benefit it's fantastic fuel economy AND the £35.00 per year road tax.

BUT there's the the rub, a good diesel example will be a little more pricey: I paid £6.6k for my 2002, 55,000 mile tdi SE. This included a full Audi service history, plus a year's warranty and MOT.

So, if I may be so bold, may I suggest 'sitting on your hands' for a little to enable you the opportunity to 'reach a little further'? There are diesel versions out there at the top-end of your current budget but they're very few and far between (and you have to be VERY quick to catch them!). Generally, the cheaper ones I viewed were a little worse for wear; the A2 is fantastically constructed but like anything, it will suffer if not cared for.

In essence, just take your time, your A2 is out there waiting for you somewhere, and it will be the right one!

Best of luck, and if I (a relative newbie) can be of any help, please reply through the forum.

Kind regards,

Michael

hey, i was in the same situation, wanting a good reliable car and cheap to maintain.. i brought a 1.4TDi on a 51reg (80k) with full service history and major parts done (cam belt plus others) only basic spec with extra panoramic roof (which looks nice as the car is sliver) for 4K so far car runs excellent, only glitch is may require a new intercooler or hopefully can get it repaired. But car £33 to fill and over does 330 miles, £35 road tax and only £320 to insure... so overall really economical car!!:)

cheers for replies so far guys,

yeah my plan is for us to get to £3500 (in about 3-4weeks time) then we wil keep saving at a rate of around £300 a week and keep looking out for the right car to come, we have a car so in no rush, we will just wait for the right car and in the mean time the budget will slowly creep up, just really looking forward to getting one, always had a soft spot for the a2, prob the most classy small car around imho.

The mrs is dead chuffed to be getting it too, and im an mpg junkie so cant wait to see what i can get out of it.

i managed over 900 miles in my passat tdi 110bhp on a run once so im sure ill get the most out of an a2 tdi

i just sold my petrol 1.4 mainly due to lack of performance, we realised this was a problem instantly and only kept the car for two to three months.
i have driven a tdi now and must say it's much more nippy.
also the fuel consumption of the petrol wasn't as good as we thought, though we are mainly driving around town.
definately try before you buy.
if you like diesels generally like i do you will only be happy with a tdi imho.
(no offence meant to any petrol owners)
