Loud induction noise....

Evening all

My wife noticed a 'louder' than normal noise coming from the engine. We all know that the oil burners aren't quite by modern standards but she's correct, it is noisier. It almost sounds like an induction noise ie it's an air intake noise and not a mechanical clunking noise.

I've had a quick check for the obvious loose boost hoses etc but didn't find anything obvious other than the filter housing at the bottom of the front bumper is all but knackered with a twisted / broken base and therefore not sealing the housing....thus basically allowing non-filtered air into the engine.

Does anyone know if this could cause an induction sounding noise?

Has the undertray gone walkies at the same time as the increased noise and knackered filter housing base? I'm assuming your car didn't have an undertray previously if you were able to get to the filter housing that easily - but then again, my other half commented on a random 'noise' while commuting to work and back on the motorway about 8 months ago - which I diagnosed on seeing the car next morning as the spring broken in half with an obvious 5 inch drop in height on that side being supported from complete collapse by the anti-roll bar!

New air filter box bought so will report back once fitted. Fingers crossed it fixes the noise.

@Rosscopeco Get an undertray fitted asap. Not only does it contain some engine noise it also insulates the engine bay allowing the engine to warm up . It protects the various components from the worst of the elements ( it is obviously not completely sealed ), but another important job of the undertray is to locate the Webasto exhaust pipe to keep the hot exhaust off plastics and rubbers and also prevent the exhaust getting tangled in the belts.

For the record....I fitted the new air filter box and hey presto, the noise is now back to the normal diesel rattle with no induction noise. Just shows how sensitive even small air leaks can be in terms of the noise they make.

Thanks for all the input...
