Low oil thingy

Yeah so I was driving to the seaside, about halfway the LOW OIL thing pops on my dashboard. I make a stop at a gas station, and I buy a 5 40 oil container(1L) and I put that all in. Is that bad? Car runs fine now. Do I need an oil change?

low oil light.

Hi ESSON,
Every thing should be fine, But next time check your DIP STICK inside of front service flap, the yellow marker on end of same has a grid marking like this ###, this is the oil level indicator, do not fill above the top of this marker, or it may damage the cat/ converter!
just to confirm use of dip stick, pull this fully out of tube, wipe bottom end of same with cloth/ tissue to clean off the old oil, re insert the stick fully into the tube as far as it will go,wait 5 seconds then pull it out again and check the oil level on ###, if it is below the top of grid mark ,for example ;half way down the marker then you can fill up with 1/2 litre of oil( approx), hope this is of some help,
Cheers, ALAN.
Ps, It is a known problem that the yellow plastic marker with level grid on it,these do occasionally break/snap off! in this case you will have to purchase a new dop stick complete, only about £5/6 pounds from dealer but make sure you tell them what engine you have ie; petrol or diesel, (they are two different lengths).

had the same experience 2 weeks ago. I poured in some 5w40 oil that I had left (600ml ?). I checked afterwards and the dipstick shows just the min level.
I have the car for 5 month now and when I got it, I checked the oil level on the dipstick and it was in the middle. The oil warning light came on after I had driven only 1500 km since then (I don't drive alot with the A2, it's my 2nd/3rd car). That's quite a serious engine oil consumption...

I had the same problems on my A2 was always topping up with long life oil. Reckon I did an oil change just topping it up when required. I now drive a 1.4 Polo done 18k and never yet had the need to put in any long life oil in. Just had its first service and I dont expect to put any oil in between now and its next service in 20k time.
