One has just rusted through and local garage cannot source a replacement anywhere (my A2 is a 2005 TDi) So they suggest the otherwise perfect A2 can only be written off. Any suggestions please? Reg No PX 05 WRZ.

What a load of tosh
There were some second hand ones in the market place a few days ago st £65 for a pair of the cast ones which don’t rot either
You need to find a better garage my friend

Some ideas here:

Best of luck though as already mentioned, sounds like you need a new mechanic. I just bought a (now) very clean 90 because someone couldn't find the part to fix it. A2 parts are easy to get almost without exception.
You'll find the other side easily...

Interestingly autodoc how different part numbers for 1.6fsi , TDi and 1.4i

Which is crazy because they are exactly the same thought the models. I fitted ones off a 1.4 breaker onto my tdi90.

And I imagine they already had a buyer in mind for your car. Time to move on to a different garage.

Maybe, but would seem a bit pointless considering the little variance between each model in terms of weight and performance from the factory.

Agreed only 130kg between lightest and heaviest.

For example the 1.6fsi is in theory 10%+ heavier than a 1.4i

Thanks for helpful comments - I was told that the design of the arms was changed right at the end of the production run - hence the difficulty of sourcing the correct shape for my vehicle.

They did but they are interchangeable, they went from cast to stamped, both fit any a2 the stamped however rust.

It was done to save money in production between 2002-2003

Also if it were me I would replace both with the cast ones!
