Lower chain and chain tensioner replacements for the TDI

Having read Sarge's excellent piece on the subject https://www.a2oc.net/community/inde...ervicing-information.23606/page-2#post-267826 I asked my totally honest garage owner for a quote for replacing the oil pump chain, tensioner, etc on my tdi75 and met with some ridicule: 'never known one to fail....big and expensive job to replace....in the very unlikely event of a failure you could get a lower mileage replacement engine for less' and so on. But like some other contributors to this thread I would like peace of mind for long journeys.
The car has done 152K miles and I assume it hasn't had the chain replaced. The last owner took good care but I have no means of knowing what went before. I can hear no rattle in the engine at all.
I would be very grateful for members' views on how many AMF engines are running happily at 150-200K miles without having had the chain replaced, and also on whether one could hope to get warning of impending failure. Is there usually a rattle or increased vibration, for instance?
My VW/Audi specialist said near word for word what yours said, so left me in a bit of a condrum!

Wonder if you get the plastic gliders as repkit?

I decided to wait until the third cambelt change before the oil chain replacement (now 100k and second cambelt only)

No but one member removed the plastic guides from a new plate and fit them without removing the chain etc.

Comes down to personal opinion and experience
Many 1.4 tdi have had chain failures, all thru VAG range, plenty listed in Polo and Skoda forums etc with a wide range of mileages some at 60k with full dealer history
Manufacturers have little interest in long term product survivial they need to shift units
Few garages will suggest preventative maintenance of this nature
The sump can be dropped and plastics checked for condition if previous history is unknown
A precautionary change is not much more expense if coordinated with timing belt change
Chain and tensioner usually sufficient

Tensioner alone would have been sufficient in my case.

What tool did you used for pressing on the crank sprocket? tackling this job next weekend once all parts/tools arrive
If you are doing this job next weekend then you are a reasonably well equipped and skilled mechanic. Once the sproket is up to temperature it should slide on and a tap on a large socket over the crank should confirm this. In practice it is vitualy impossible to align a hot sproket and crank working under the car. I needed a threaded rod and bearing press tool to press the sproket on. See my how to on this job.

The first obvious cost at the best price I could find, £101.57 eBay, delivered:

Have you used this one? If not I'm ready to buy it from you or even the old one if it's intact, I can't find it and the mine is broken.
Thank you

I used it and the old one, which was in reasonable condition was scrapped a long time ago. Sorry can't help, Audi sell them but at a price.

Not easy to fit, heat doesn't do the job. I had to press it on.

Thank you

Having mine done as we speak. I'll post a full thread once i get the old parts back. Looks not too bad from this photo but wasn't willing to risk it.

I did the one on my 90 at 180k and looked completely fine. The one in the 333k car is still original, don’t think it’s worth replacing at this point, let’s see how long it goes

These wheels are available new. I damaged one and thought I may need a new one. Audi definitely stocked them when I did this job. Also readily available on eBay, replica or OE quality.

Please, could you give me links if you have, thanks

Have a look on ebay for the part number in your photo - 045105209. Quite a few hits - some dubious, some bl**dy expensive....
Most of them are Chinese, do you trust Chinese parts? Some one has tested them?
