Manual Air Control - Stuck to Hot

Hi All,

I posted a few weeks back that I could not get the manual air controls to work as two rods were not fitted to the dials, this has now been done by Service Plus when the MOT happened last week.

The issue now is that the manual dial for the hot to cold only moves around to about 1'oclock on the dial and stops and also the air is only hot, any ideas or suggestions ? the garage says the lower dash would need to come out to access the unit that provides the air.

Thanks

Ems

Hi Ems,

It would seem that the garage have just put the control rods in place without first checking the alignment of the dials against the position of the directing flaps within the air ducts. Consequently, the dials only turn through a small angle, and you don't have full control over the flaps' range of motion.
The garage either didn't test their work before they handed the car back to you, or they were aware of the issue but couldn't be bothered to do it properly.

the garage says the lower dash would need to come out to access the unit that provides the air.
Nonsense. They clearly didn't understand what they were doing first time around, hence why the system doesn't work as it's supposed to, and are now just making it up as they go along. There's no need to remove any of the dash in order to resolve this issue, and I might question whether they have the familiarity with the A2 to do so without creating further issues.
Whilst I've no doubt the garage do a good job of everyday stuff like oil changes, brakes, exhausts, etc, I question whether they have the specific knowledge of the A2 to properly solve this problem.

All the best,

Tom

Again page from the manual explaining the installation and checking...

If they charged you for doing the job then they can reset it properly for free.
If you need more pages just select from the left side and print them off and give to the garage or do it yourself. Knobs verical and rotate both shafts in the heater both directions then centralise at one turn then fit to the knobs and check for range air distribution and temperature.

Excellent, Graham. Well found. A much more constructive reply than mine, with focus on the solution rather than the problem. :)

Emily, if you're going to give the garage another shot at solving this problem, Graham has effectively done their homework.

You may or may not have seen that I'll be based in Leighton Buzzard during much of June...
I'm happy to solve this problem should you wish. In November, we also discussed repairing your instrument cluster. My stay in Leighton Buzzard would also present an opportunity to get this job done, should it still need doing.

Kind regards,

Tom

One thing I didn't mention is I believe the air distribution shaft has to correspond with the screen position so that would need to be tested with the blower and checking for the air flow. The temperature one I would set at the mid point one revolution.

Thanks all for you feedback and guidance.

I think a trip to Leighton Buzzard may be the best answer :)

You really have nothing to loose if you try yourself in the mean time. Plus the satisfaction of fixing something is priceless. We all had to start somewhere to learn.

I'm more than happy to help, Emily.

Take a look at the schedule at the bottom of the opening post of this thread...
Are you able to let me know which of the available slots suit you? Having a few options would be great, as I'm still building the schedule and am trying to make it work for as many club members as possible.
Would you like me to fix your instrument cluster as well as sorting the heating/ventilation system? We discussed this via PM towards the end of last year.

Best wishes,

Tom
