Manual Aircon Help

HI All,

My A2 has manual Aircon and we had trouble with it since I bought last autumn, having had some help to take the control unit out the rods that connects the dials to the back end are missing, I have been able to buy replacement rods but have no idea how to install them.

Could someone help, happy to take the car to someone who could work on this for me as part of a paid activity, I am near Reigate in Surrey.

Thanks

Ems

Are you certain that any control rods are missing? I had a similar control issue with my son's 2003 Polo a couple of years. After consulting 7zap (or similar), I was also convinced that at least one control rod was missing. It wasn't, one control rod's function was performed by a potentiometer incorporated into the panel.

There are many reasons why aircon won't function and this is the least likely. Why would someone remove them? It would leave you unable to adjust the temperature, even without A/C working.

FWIW I am recommissioning a 1999 A4 with full climate as the daily driver: the compressor belt had been removed and the fan unplugged by PO, guessing as an ill-informed "fuel saving" measure.
People can do strange things in the absence of knowledge.

Manual dial controls = no climate control.
For a 2003 Polo there is the option of manual aircon with the temperature control with one knob; you cannot select a particular temperature. Fan control is also manual. A similar system is also available with Up's. The OP describes the system as Aircon. Either way, the links to the controls could be mechanical or electrical.

@RAB you are correct the rotary dial controller is a mixture of mechanical control ( the rods ) and potentiometer / switch.

From memory, there was only one flexible cable on the Polo, but 7zap (and presumably Etka) show two!

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments and advice so far, the only connector to the aircon unit is the electrical cable that controls the speed of air, this works and there are definitely no other connections to the unit. I have purchased the rods and they do slot into the control unit, but I cannot see how and where they go behind the column. Airflow and temperature are controllable.

Ami has kindly offered some local help, so I will take this option to start with and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

Ems.

I am afraid that you don't have aircon, only manual heating control. The two flexible drives connect to two gear mechanisms behind the glovebox and the driver side storage compartment.

Certainly two flexi shaft on the A2 with no aircon and manual dial controllers
