Michelin and GM to bring airless tyres to cars

I'll believe it when I see it.

They've been showing concepts for decades now - while it sounds good on paper i highly doubt price/performance and mostly longevity will be competitive at all.

From what I've read it is mostly reliability and heat produced - with air in the tyre bumps get absorbed by the air moving around this would have rubber/material bits doing that job causing stress and wear on those little rubber/metal springs. It'll take some crazy materials to make this viable.

Can you imagine the potential problems of material getting jammed inside the openings and completely wrecking the tire...!!! Surely they should be employing the use of puncture proof materials that have been used in bicycle tires for some time now and a more reliable means of sealing the tire to a rim...!!!
