Mine is a t**t!

Thanks guys - So, I'm further confused by the acronyms. My car is 1.4 diesel and I think the engine code is AMF. So what does BBY stand for?

are AMF and BBY relating to the same thing albeit on different models?

The BBY is the later 1.4 petrol engine, so you've got

AUA - early 1.4 from 2000 - 2003ish (seems to be more reliable than the BBY as it seems to suffer less from piston slap, i don't know why).
BBY - later 1.4 2003 - 2005 (identified by the use of coil packs rather than ignition leads)
AMF - earlier TDI 2000-late 2003
BHC - later 75 hp TDI from 2004 until runout (watercooled EGR and anti shudder valve, but very little difference to the AMF)
ATL - 90 bhp diesel from late 2003 until 2005 (Variable vane turbo, lower compression ratio, stronger internals and mated to an dual mass flyhweel)
BAD - 1.6 FSI petrol 2002 - 2005

If your car is a 2001 diesel as per your profile, it is indeed an AMF.

It's a Euro3 spec and was replaced mid-production with the Euro4 BHC in 75BHP form, and the 90BHP ATL was introduced. The difference between AMF and BHC is mainly the vacuum-contolled anti-shudder valve on the AMF against an electric one on the BHC. The ATL also has a different turbo and glowplugs (as well as the dreaded dual-mass flywheel)..

BBY is the code for the later 1.4 petrol - the earlier ones were AUA. Both are Euro4. Again there is a difference, noticeably the separate coilpacks for each cylinder on the BBY rather than one coil with HT leads to the spark plugs on the AUA.

Edit, oops, forgot the BAD for the FSI.

Almost Steve ... BBY from mid 2002 ?
