Mirror only moves on a diagonal axis

My passenger side mirror only moves on the diagonal whichever way the control knob is moved.
Driver's is fine.

2pm to 8pm kind of thing, won't just move up and down or left to right.

Any comments or advice gratefully received.

Ironically, being able to rotate diagonally should facilitate getting the mirror glass off and being able to investigate what has gone awry. If you can rotate the mirror glass to face inwards as much as possible with the window open, then get outside and close the door; you should be able to pass a plastic or tape-wrapped screwdriver through the gap now evident between the casing and the outboard mirror edge just behind the plane of the mirror glass itself. You have to insert this usually around 2 inches or so before hitting the inner mounting ring that locates onto the motor-driven ring ; once here then it is a case of rotating the screwdriver along the axis of the car further to try to release one of the four hook clips that bind the mirror onto the motor-drive frame. A bit of patience is needed with this step to avoid snapping the hooks off - I have been very lucky and managed to do this on six mirrors at the first time of asking when replacing with heated glass equivalents. Best of luck!

Worth checking the mirror wiring plug on the passenger door controller. Loose or corroded contacts can produce weird results.

I had that problem before, but after leaving the car sorn'd on the drive for 9 months during the first lock down, it started to work properly again... Not of much help to you, but I would indeed suspect there to be a loose or corroded contact somewhere, just like @audifan mentioned.

OK, thanks for all the advice, will take a look when I get the chance in the next few days.

It does look like a short circuit causing both motors to work at the same time, maybe.

I'm not sure what "the mirror wiring plug on the passenger door controller" means. To me, the controller is the knob on the driver's door. Or is there a controller inside the mirror itself?

The passenger door motor controller is located behind the door card.. It controls the signals from the mirror switch to operate the movement of the motors in the mirror. It also controls the electric window motor and the door locking signals to the door lock.

You were right Graham with your diagnosis. My passenger wing mirror would move outwards and inwards but not up and down. A2Steve kindly supplied me with a replacement motor controller and its working fine again now. :) ?
