Misfire/Rough Running, Engine Light etc... A2 1.4 Petrol

It's been a while since my last post as the car has been running nicely and reliably up until now, sorry, but this is yet another diagnostic plea for help!

The story in "brief"
1. Last night: Car started to have a little "hiccup" when driving, especially on acceleration. it's always been a bit lumpy, but I did notice the difference.

2. This morning: Driving along the A1, still a bit lumpy but when running at constant speed, all is ok-ish. Get to my turn off and engine not happy at all, engine light comes on for the first time. One roundabout (200 meters) later, engine light flashing every second, i.e. on purpose, not disappearing then reappearing. A few hundred meters later and I'm at my destination, so I turn the engine off and get to my work.

3. This afternoon: I've called the cavalry in advance, but in the meantime have a look under the bonnet. Sure enough, looks like an engine. Oil is fine, water is fine. Preliminary check seems to be ok, all connectors on etc. EXCEPT!!! the very small and short pipe that runs from the top of the cylinders to the air intake plastic box running across the car at the back. I reconnect it and hope for the best...

4. Upon starting the car, all appears to be ok at first but it is clear it's still not happy - though with pipe reattached it is marginally better; i.e. it's back to how it was the evening before.

5. VAGCOM scan complete, found one fault code on cylinder 4, intermittent misfire. Cleared fault and restarted engine, all lights are off.

6. Nursed the car home at a reasonably gentle but especially consistent 50mph, only coming to a complete stop twice when traffic lights dictated! Cars crashing all around me while I plough through them... just kidding... anyway, the rough running/lack of power is especially prevalent when going up hill/pulling away; car goes like a kangaroo/bunny hopping. No indicator lights come back on.

7. Home now, complete VAGCOM scan done again; all clear. No faults found. Baffling, as clearly there is a problem!

Questions:

1. I suspect like most people reading, that the usual engine components are possible causes, i.e. coil packs, spark plugs, injectors and the like. Does anybody recognise the symptoms as a common fault on the 1.4 petrol cars?

2. Is there anybody recommended in the Hertfordshire (St.Albans) area that might be able to take a look at it?

3. Which side (offside/nearside) is cylinder number 4?

4. Any other ideas welcome!

Thanks in advance to all for any help they can offer.

Jon.

Hi i will try and help you out---i suspect you have a coil pack or coil thats failing or failed. Cylinder 4 is the one furthest from the cam belt end of the engine-so standing in front of the car looking at the engine it is the plug furthest to the right. Some 1.4 petrols have a combined coil with conventional HT leads to each plug, others have individual coil packs that fit directly to each plug. Either is available quite cheap and is easy to change.
hope this helps cheers mike

Hi Mike,
Thank you very much for the reply, really helpful to have your opinion as it pretty well ties in with what I was thinking, but with my knowledge based on the average car, it's great to hear from you with your A2 knowledge.
With regard to the coil packs, my car has the BBY engine, and so has a coil pack over each spark plug - looked on the usual sources and appears to be around £20 per coil so will likely buy one.

Having had a look with a torch (it's getting very dark, very early, at the moment isn't it!) I see that every one of my coil packs is different! I've written down the numbers which are as follows:
------------------------
Cylinder 1 Coil (cam shaft end, with knowledge from Mike, thank you):

BERU
Germany
0040 102 030
ZSE 030
0132232410
------------------------
Cylinder 2 Coil

VW AG
036 905 715
EE1 SE
ELDOR 78180004
ZIF3 111 4 28104
------------------------
Cylinder 3 Coil

BERU
0040 102 030
ZSE 030
0085321911
------------------------
Cylinder 4 Coil
VW/AUDI (logo)
036 905 100B
EE1 SE
ELDOR 78180001

So my question is would anyone know which one is correct? Is there any advantage to replacing all 4 coil packs? From my background, I would always have insisted on having matching coil packs etc. but perhaps I'm old fashioned or the Audi engine isn't so touchy.

Thanks in advance to one and all (and thank you very much again to Mike).

I would say buy one from a source that you can get some more from. That way if the one fixes the problem then you can if you wish replace the other three-keep old good ones in the boot as spares, you never know. good luck mike

Thank you Mike, very good suggestion. Do you know which of the coil packs I have is the correct one, or would any old one be ok to get? I was thinking the Beru as I have two similar Beru's already?

I would say the eldor no4 is a genuine one. If your car was an fsi-1.6 I would say go genuine. But the 1.4 is less picky with its parts so I would go to euro parts or gsf. Cheers mike

Thanks Mike, I've ordered a single coil now and so will update this post when it's fitted with the verdict... hopefully positive!

I know it's a completely different engine but when I suffered a similar issue on a 4cyl petrol Clio I used to have the replacement of a single coil pack shifted the problem to a different cylinder. If that happens to you I'd be tempted to replace all 4 at once with matching types.

Thanks for the advice; certainly makes sense. For now, I've replaced the one coil pack and it has fixed the problem straight away, so it definitely was that.. I may still consider changing them all, but so far (touch wood) all is well. If I get another failure then I'll replace the set of 4, including the one I've just done as it is a cheapo unbranded job since I didn't want to fork out vw/audi prices considering I wasn't 100% sure whether it was the coil or not. Anyway, the point is that all is currently well, so it was a relatively painless fix in the end, not the hundreds I had envisaged it might have cost had it been an injector for example!

Thanks for the help and advice to Mike and iainmd.
