MK1 Audi TT Opinions?

I looked at and drove a couple of Mk1’s and then decided on a Mk2. It’s my daily driver and at 6ft1 just didn’t feel comfortable in the Mk1...
I have a 3.2 Quattro roadster, DSG, magnetic ride, 19” wheels, extended leather...love the noise, love the pace...and the road holding is phenomenal. As a daily it’s a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut!!

Looks exactly the same as the one I had albeit I had the 2.0t with turbine wheels.

Just learned something - I always assumed the 3.2 engine was only fitted to Mk 1 TTs

Cheers Spike

Just a quick update: collected this last week. A 180, light grey full leather, 126K, unmolested but needs catching up on all servicing including belt, Haldex, rear tyres and a little bit of paint to tidy up on some previous work. 2004, all details there (handpack, Audi Approved handover package including cleaning products and so on). Also needs a wheel refurb.

For all the above, it drives tight as tight and I love the colour combo: not too shouty. Other than the very brief test run, I've not driven it due to only evidence of timing belt was 2009! Lots of oil changes since, so it may have had another but I'll not risk it, hence the trailer despite it being just down the road.

Very nice too. It looks like Glacier Blue, in the pic ...

Somewhat belatedly, a trio of pics of the TT.

I have to be honest, once I'd bought it, for some reason I lost all interest in it. Drove it once, thought it was a bit hum ho, and threw it into storage. The other day thought I might as well sell it on, so dragged it out and drove it home. Seemed better than I remembered. I often do this: absolutely have to have something, go flat out to find one and then once here go totally cold. A few months pass and I glance across 'I really should do something with it,' My interest rises, I tick off some jobs and all of a sudden we're off!

Anyway, gave it a 7/10 clean (actually to put it on eBay, which it is), but now I've been looking at it all week it's really grown on me. It's got just the right amount of shove I think, certainly grips and the perceived quality is just insane. On the one hand my head is absolutely full at the moment and I just want a load of stuff gone, on the other, this is the prettiest TT I've seen for a long time and it's the closest thing I own to being 'posh' at the moment. I might well give it a timing belt kit and service at the weekend and tax / register it in my own name: the few times I've moved it have been on trade plates up to now.

Timing belt looks a thoroughly unpleasant job but I suspect it's running the original: no evidence of change in the otherwise full history. I was certain I'd seen a reference to something in 2009 but later realised the seller said that, there's no evidence for this that I can see. Serpentine belt is absolutely shot and no-one's going to do a timing belt and not touch the serp belt are they?

I've been thinking about a classic 900 Saab but looking at that has me in two minds, what did you give for it? - PM me if preferred, just interested in what kind of money they're going for,

Hi.
I've also been thinking of buying a TT but the roadster version. Then my brother went out a bought a porsche boxster 2.5 with 58k on clock good history for £4k!! Soo many bargains out there equals too much choice. ?

Ah, I love 900's! Totally different car though: 'relaxed' I'd say, but very cool indeed. A fraction sold or left compared to the TT.

TT's: £1k gets you something rather horrible: miles, wrong sort of history, rusty underneath, wrong sort of seller.

£1500, just getting in that minefield: is it a £800 one dressed up as a £1500 one, or a £2200 one at a bargain price?

£2000 You're into nicer later cars in decent colours.

£2500 Decent'ish 225's

£3000 future collectible quality if buying private.

£4500: above but from reputable dealer.

£7000 Quattro Sports in good condition quick off here.

Mine owes me somewhere between category two and three!

Yours looks lovely Barry, it’s cleaned up beautifully. If only I wasn’t having to pay for a new kitchen.......!

The TT is nicer to look at, had, by a massive margin the higher quality interior and build generally, is buttons in parts and most importantly, won't destroy itself.

Any Boxster will be by far the sweeter drive in all regards and be more of an event aurally. You'll 'go for a drive'in it. On the other hand, it may well destroy itself, which is why they're cheap.

Look up IMS bearing, D-chunk (unlikely now), bore scoring, oval cylinders etc.

That's ultimately why I baled on the 996: it always felt like a time-bomb. Not so bad on a £4k car, but a bit buttock-clenching on a £15k one (for me anyway).

The drive though? Oh my word!

If you haven't already, service the Haldex, and check the Haldex earth strap. If the cam belt hasn't been done, doubtful that the Haldex had been either.

Anyone lived with one?

When they came out the reviews were very positive but as time went on you heard more and more negatives about them: dull steering, dull brakes, under-whelming driving experience etc. They seem to get 50/50 panned / loved on places like Pistonheads which probably is quite good for there.

Is it all forum talk, with reality being a nicely made and pretty sporting coup that covers the ground well without being too full on?

Wondering about back-to-backing one against my Smart Roadster Coupe. They seem to be dirt cheap now and I can't help but feel they've done their money and can't go much lower.

Does a nice one have a 'special' feel when you get in, or does it just feel like a squashed MK4 Golf? I like the Smart but don't really trust it (well known ECU gremlins), it's a bit light for motorway work and you do feel a bit vulnerable in it. On other hand, it's rare, very cheap to run, really good fun and I love the looks.

I'm aware of the higher tax than Smart, dash display and Haldex servicing requirements (plus the usual 2nd hand car stuff).

This is the Smart (I have a 4/2 as well which is utterly brilliant): B4's, poly's, 40mm drop (these really need this visually), Toyo Proxes, rebuilt engine: almost new everything in fact. The only car I've ever bought in 'done'.

I have both a TT 225 Quattro and 1.6 FSI SE sat on my drive. I must say the TT mk1 was a car I always wanted from seeing the first blurb about it; even the Stig couldn't put me off when he said it needed a spoiler. Eventually I became the owner of my lovely TT. I can honestly say I've found it scary on snow and exhilarating on lanes. It feels planted and solid to me. I've loved owning it for the last few years. It hasn't been without it's problems. Dash leds, petrol gauge and a silly sensor in the driver's door but on the whole it's been a thoroughly reliable car to own. I doubt you'll be let down by the driving experience. Have fun!

They make a really great pair of cars. I did a little looking but was put off by the niggles i've seen mentioned on here in this thread.

I too have an FSI Sport and Mk1 TT on my drive. TT came first, about three and a half years ago, FSI about fifteen months ago. The TT is a 190 bhp FWD Coupe, chosen for the mechanical simplicity, light weight and (relative) economy. Neither disappoint.
Both from a time when Audi was still a bit independent.
Mac.
