Anyone know if you can get mor eout of a 1.4 petrol? Is there a chip? Can you fit a bigger engine?

Hi Alan, welcome to the A2oc
There are chips available for petrol engine but they only add about 5bhp - http://www.superchips.co.uk/index.php?option=com_frontpage&task=searchcat&Itemid=134
The German A2oc indicate you can get about 100 bhp from the engine but it involves major rework with new cams etc and costs around £2000.
I don't think anyone has fitted a bigger petrol engine but anything is possible if you have thousands to spend.
Sorry to say the most practical route for more power is to change your car for a 1.6fsi or a diesel with a rechip (under £300 for approx 105 bhp and masses of torque)

Cheers Spike

IIRC, there are Schrick cams for the AUA block, may have to search for under polo engine. But ideally you want to tune the fueling after changing the cams.

Don't forget the one off 1.8T transplant, i think in Germany? I also just found a cheap 1.8T mk3 GTI perfect for breaking ...

But then, for not much more than £2000, you could be looking at a small Eaton M45 or Rotrex (C15?) supercharger, a custom bracket will be needed with a piggyback ECU. Not sure anyone cracked the Magneti Marelli ECU for the 1.4 petrol, it should be possible; that may save you the £3-600 expense on a MegaSquirt/Emerald M3D or alike. Wild guess is looking at 150bhp.

or, ask Kitora, I think he has a 100bhp version of the 1.4 block for sale ;-) need a little conversion on the flywheel but sounds do-able!

does anyone know what the differences are between the 75bhp and 100bhp 1.4 engines? im presuming the main difference is in the cylinder head?

p/x the car for the 1.6FSI, it's a nice smooth engine.
I confirm !
Having owned the 1.4 for nearly 2 years, I recently bought a FSI.
The 1.6 definitely plays in another league :)
But if a big challenge is what you're looking for, then go for the 1.4 supercharging or 1.8T conversion route. Supercharging the 1.4 retains the A2 "lightweight spirit", when the 1.8T is much heavier...

Now the 2p question : is it possible to convert "easily" the 1.6 FSI to 1.6 TFSI ?

THAT is a interesting challenge! Given 1.6 FSI can be remapped, so in theory, you're one step ahead. Intercooler is ready made mountable (the diesel one). So get a bracket, turbo, oil cooling and you're set! Easier said than done...

I've seen a few 2.0TFSI with 300bhp at the wheels, okay, the 1.6 isn't exactly like the 2.0 but you could still expect a silly amount of power! Not sure how it will drive though.

Don't forget low compression pistons, or a "compression plate".

I'd be already happy with 180 bhp :)

But my question was rather to compare the 1.6 FSI with the genuime "new" TFSI (1.8). Are they based on the same block ? Same head ?
It's always easier to re-use parts from the bin than engineering & manufacturing one-off parts...
