MOT tomorrow - fuel flap not open

Went to the petrol station this evening and guess what? just before MOT is due the cap decides it is not going to work.

Anyway I read that they test to see if cap opens on MOT, so should I tell them before or afterwards. As I am going to have them look into it another day, I am guessing it is the button or the solenoid, will have them check the power is going to the button and solenoid before I have new parts and also try a suggestion I saw here in the morning about pressing the unlock car on the keypad while pressing the fuel cap release.

Hi richard
Don't forget you can manually release the flap by removing the small trim panel in the boot (behind the back lights)then pull down on the flap actuator rod - check your owners manual for more details. I think the MOT check is to ensure the actual filler cap is fitted and seals correctly and not directly related to the function of the plastic flap

Seems the solenoid is a bit dead so any one got the part no so I can have a look on ebay etc, or order from vag parts. The garage said it is not that easy to fit the new solenoid for the fuel is that right? they said it was quite hard on an a3..

The car seem to have got me to france and back, it failed on two things though I had to have a new front left tyre because of a cut showing in it, and the front left side light didnt come on at first... dodgy wire connection but that was all. When I got the car back and was driving the battery light was flashing. After a few hours it stopped so i'm guessing they left something on and drained the battery. All is good now though.

The mot inspection people was in testing the car on the day mine was done so he said they picked up on some silly things.

Hi Richard,

Before you go spending, get someone to press the button to release the flap whilst you have your head in the boot. Listen out for the sound of the solenoid actuating. If it does, then you'll need to check the linkages.

If not, firstly check the fuses, only then should you get a new solenoid.

Part number 4E0 862 150 - £12.81 and yes, it isn't an A2 part number!

To fit it, you'll probably need to remove the side panel from the boot, unless you have the hands of a child and the dexterity of a gynecologist!!

Cheers,

Mike

Not a sound coming from the solenoid when button pressed had someone press the button for me. What fuse is the fuel flap on, any ideas? Will a scan show any useful information where the fault is.

Hi Richard,

Try fuses 36 and 42 (they both feed the convenience controller).

It is unlikely that a scan will show anything in this case either,

Cheers,

Mike

Neither the fuses, so I will order that item from vagparts. Thanks skipton, will try an get it fitted at home by vag dealer, or else I will end up with a big bill.

I saw that thanks spike, I also tried it and I hope it is only the solenoid and not something expensive.
