Hi all does anyone have an idea what this part is:

Im finding that it comes on when ive come to a stop. Ive only really noticed it in the last 2 months.

I guess you have a diesel and are referring to the webasto heater.

It comes on when the outside temperature is below a certain figure to provide a stream of hot air by burning diesel.

After you switch off the engine it performs some kind of shutdown process which would be similar to the noise you describe.

Do a search for webasto or auxilliary heater on here and you should find plenty of info.

Edit: SNAP we must have been writing that at the same time MIKE!

Yes, you've come across the Webasto heater, which is basically a little diesel-fuelled boiler that kicks in at low outside temperatures.

If you look under the car when it's running, you'll see the exhaust coming from mear the front offside wheel.

Cheers,

Mike

electric one? does that just have a heater element in it?

Yes, it only heats the air - which probably warms the cabin up quicker while the Webasto heats the coolant so the engine warms up faster.

How long should a 1.4tdi take to warm up on these cold mornings ( -1 to -4)?
Mine is taking about 3 miles on dual carriageway at about 60mph.

Just seemed to me that my old VW Passat tdi warmed up a lot quicker than this.
That was a 1.9 maybe the engine size makes a difference.
It`s difficult keeping the screen clear when it is cold so visibility can be a problem unless you have the blower on full tilt & then it feels like your sitting in an arctic gale.
