Motor oil level warning stay on despite level ok

Hello,

The motor oil light warning of my A2 remains on despite the fact that oil has been added even more than the maximum level.

The garage that i contacted said it is possible that when the oil level was too low the measurement of the level can have been disturbed.

Any suggestion of what to do?

Thanks,

Willy

Is the warning oil level, or oil pressure?

In case the question isn't clear - is the oil warning symbol yellow or red?

We had something like this when the loom to the oil pressure switch had worn through.

The oil level sensor is known to fail, not just in the A2 but it tends to happen to most cars.
For what it's worth, the wiring to my oil pressure sensor was bad right where it leaves the connector so if you get that red warning, that is an easy thing to check for.

If you see a red oil warning, I'd check the oil pressure pdq. True, it could be the oil pressure sensor, but if it isn't, it's goodbye engine.

If it is an oil level light (as opposed to pressure) then it should go out when the service hatch is opened to fill the oil, so perhaps the service hatch button is broken?

The light should turn off for at least a few miles regardless of the sensor I believe.

I think this is due to the sensor not being able to quickly identify changes in oil level, so the car assumes the service hatch being opened means the oil has been topped up so cancels the light for a while.

Hello all,

in my 2002 FSI the oil sensor warning light (yellow) goes on with a loud sound when I climb up my underground garage in the morning, then it goes off after a few miles. Strange! Has anyone experienced this? The sound is so loud to alarming, even if the light is yellow and the oil is OK, engine rebuilt 2000 miles ago... Thanks

Stefano

Hi
I think this is normal, I remember being scared witless when the ‘running low on fuel‘ alarm triggered for the first time when I got the car a couple of years ago, there is no mistaking or ignoring it!

That must be a pretty steep incline to get out of your garage, I assume it’s so steep that the oil slops back enough for the oil level sensor to think you are low on oil

best wishes

J

Yeah do not run the engine with the red oil warning. It just being the oil sensor is really the best case scenario. In my case it was easy to diagnose (as the cable was clearly broken).

Amber Oil Level Low Warning Lamp on our A2 1.4 Petrol comes on, and stays on for Weeks at a time, when Oil Level is OK. Always goes out eventually. The Level Switch must stick sometimes. I just keep checking the Oli Level.

Having the Oil Level too High can cause Engine Damage, by the way.

Hello all,

thanks for your suggestions. In fact the incline to get out of my garage is pretty steep but it's the first time that this orange (NOT red) sign appears, the 1,4 I won never had this problem. Adding a bit of oil (200 cc) cured the alarm, or so it seems.

I am however with those complaing about the worst part of the whole A2. i.e. the oil level dipstick. I have a very good eyesight (I'm an ophthalmologist ) but I have trouble checking it on the dark brown/black plastic finale part. Why didn't they do it in orange, like the ring on the other end? Beats me. I've even tought of painting it! (Joking....)

Best

Stefano

When that happened to me a few times on long uphills, giving me small panic attacks, an oil change had cured the issue completely. Even it wasn't necessary by time, the oil got dark quicker due driving shorter distances and less longer runs, so it probably had less lubrication uphills and trigger the oil sensor.
