What's on the roof.......

30ft racing rowing boat. Yes it is legal!

Owned it over a year now. Is a great car / van / dustbin.... love the A2.

WOW. Bet you need to keep your wits about yourself driving with that on your roof. Reminds me of a mate of mine telling me about how much of a pain it was to ride his over stretched chopper bike. "T" junctions were his problem due to the fact that with the choppers wheel on the line he had poor vision of the junction.
Cheers for sharing and carry on a2'ing mike

That's a special photo..........I'll be watching Police, Camera, Action hoping to see the A2 giving plod the run-around.

That's made my evening.

Cheers

Jeff

Cheers guys.

Have done over 500 miles with that on the roof.... is interesting, especially in cross winds. T junctions at tight turns can be a bit nerve racking as I'm sat some 4 meters behind the front of the boat. Having said that it is very stable normally and open roads and motorways are quite easy.

Here's the view from the drivers seat

Are there not some regs on requirements for side markings and a rear warning triangle on loads this long ?

Cheers Spike

Spike,

There are clear guides on forward and rearward overhangs. One reason I mentioned the police.

The law used to be marker boards should be used for loads of this type, both front and rear (the red rags marking the endpoints are only suitable for minor overhangs.
However, when I gave up driving long/wide/heavy loads the law was just changing for a more stringent safety policy.
I think the new law means the police must be informed prior to a journey, and the route agreed.

Still.......a nice pic nonetheless...

Cheers

Jeff

Just to clear this up.

Racing rowing boats have special dispensation under Road vehicles regulations 1986, regulations 81 and 86, schedule 12, which allows up to 3.05m overhangs with end markers (the red rags) to be carried without escort or prior notification.

The load on the car is 2.85m ovehangs (I measure every time) so is legal. There are exceptions to this though, such as parts of London, where the total length is limited to 10.98m and the overhangs cannot exceed 2.6m without police premission.

It gets some looks, but have never been pulled (yet!!!). Alway carry a copy of the legislation just in case.

Jon,

You're a wise man.

I'm surprised you've not been given a tug anyway, as it's certainly an unusual sight.
I would imagine turning left at tight junctions requires some skilful judgement.

Your second picture would make a great advertising image.

As you're close to Castle Combe it would be great to see the car in October at ADI (and with the boat aloft it would certainly draw attention).

Good on you.

Cheers

Hi Jon

Its nice to see you have really done your homework.
I was not aware of the regs for boats and thought you may be breaking some of the general rules which apply to long loads - and did not want you or other club members risking being stopped by the law.

Cheers Spike

I'm suprised I haven't been stopped..... I carry a copy of the rules just in case because, as you say Spike, I'm breaking the general rules.

Sorry I missed the ADI. The boat makes as few trips as possible.... It's a total pig to carry and drinks fuel! I'll see if I can get to the next one.

Love the photo great pic. Not sure about the none German Janousek on the roof.... Empacher may be more appropate not sure about yellow on the red. I opted for an italian boat so i cant really talk may try it with the brokensky and roof bars! Great to see a boat fits on the A2 just need to blow the dust off mine!

Aha!! A rower.... I wish it was an Empacher but the club wouldn't streach to that.....

What do you have? A phillipi?? I rowed one this year and loved it. However my faithful of Glynne Locke will have to stay as the phillipi cost as much as the car!!!

This years mad load..... an even bigger boat!!!!

This time it splits in half to make two shorter sections....

Only 2 meters at the front this time.
