My A2 'blog'...

I'd certainly be grateful if they're still on display but don't take the tailgate apart on just my behalf!

That link looks to be seriously useful - straight into bookmarks.

Top man!

Andy B

Here is the page with the part numbers.. there are 4 aerial amps from what I can see (parts 4 and 5) and part numbers depends on configuration...
http://www.partsbase.org/audi/audi-a2-a2-eu-2004-03500-electrical-parts-for-navigation-system/

I would still check the PN's on the original parts anyway to confirm..

Couple more things have turned up...

Second hand condenser that I cleaned up and painted...

...and shiny new front wheels bearings...
20140530_171815.jpg

Sadly it now turns out the NS rear bearing is grumbling so I have also ordered a pair of rear bearings too... good job I got the car cheap LOL..

Big shout out the Jason at http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/ for sorting me out... their prices on FAG bearings are amazing tbh... cheapest by far... ECP and GSF wanted 50 ish quid + vat trade for one, All German Parts were 34 ish quid + vat... needed a break on my spending lol...

Just need to get hold of another ABS sensor and then I can crack on with the job and hopefully put an end to the bulk of the spending LOL

....although I am still looking out for another engine to build ;P

Ok... small update.... had a minor setback with the S3 last weekend... managed to go from third to second while accelerating up through the box... we worked out the engine saw just over 10,000 rpm for a brief moment (caught it as quick as I could)...!

The engine pulled fine afterwards and seemed unaffected but a proper inspection showed the exhaust valves had contacted the pistons and the cam belt had jumped a tooth... not the end of the world... just means the S3 is off the road until I get a new set of valves and rebuild the head...

What has this got to do with A2's I hear you ask... well... the gear change on the A2 is quite clunky and stiff to say the least... does seem to need to be man handled in rather than the somewhat smoother action of the S3 gearbox... the travel across the gate is a little longer on the A2 too and I think where I have been driving the A2 so much recently muscle memory got the better of me and unfortunately resulted in this little hiccup... Ah well... wasn't planning on taking the engine apart this soon after the rebuild but there you go... lesson here kids is 2nd gear is not 4th gear especially when changing up at nearly 8000rpm :)

Anyway... I managed to borrow my friends kit for doing the wheel bearings and the nice lady from GSF dropped off the other ABS sensor so cracked on getting the uprights built.

Fitted the tool...
20140607_094721.jpg

Used the press rather than the supplied threaded bar setup as it was easier...
20140607_095243.jpg

Used stainless bolts for the ABS sensors in the hope they will survive a little longer than the standard bolts...
20140607_101745.jpg

Nice rear end shot ;P
20140607_101907.jpg

And voila!
20140607_104019.jpg

Hope to get some time to fit them either this weekend or next weekend... along with the aircon condenser and the new rear wheel bearings that arrived this week lol...

Hopefully that should sort all the current batch of issues out and I can leave her alone for a bit to concentrate on fixing the S3 as I also have a gearbox to build for it too...

Talking of gearboxes... I didn't realise that you could get 6 speed conversions for the 02J boxes (other than SQS ones used for dog box conversions)... I spend most of my commute to work on the motorway and economy seems ok at 60mph but knock it up to 70mph to keep ahead of the trucks and it suffers..

Would appreciate any feedback on anyone that has had this conversion done... I am aware that Vince at Stealth does these (he has built a few boxes for Bill @ Badger5 before) but will be doing it myself if I go for it

Be nice to get to a point that I can actually drive either of the Audi's I own without having to fix something LOL

Timmus did this write-up on his gearbox recon and 6 speed conversion, all done by Stealth - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...n-and-6-Speed-Conversion&highlight=eurotuning

Regarding the gearchange, it may be worth checking / resetting the cables - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?13062-Gearchange-cable-adjust-reset

Cheers Spike

Thanks dude... I did spot Timmus's thread a while back but never fully read it... interesting stuff :)

Will give the cable reset a go

Early start to the day to take a trip over to pick up some SE wheels from Steve B (Birchall)... the M4 has got to be the most boring drive known to man lol...

Nice bloke and very nice A2... was surprised how well the RSTT 18's suit the car (I have these same wheels on my S3)... also saw the other A2 with S3 Avus wheels on... I have a set of these (my original S3 wheels) that are in service as winters for the S3 currently... bit torn now as I like the idea of using the AVus wheels but also still keen to stick to the SE's and lower the car a little...

Anyway... after a 4hr round trip I got back to the unit and swapped the front wheels over as one of mine has a bulge from a pothole and would rather not have that go on me on the motorway...

Then cracked on with the rear wheel bearings as the NSR bearing was whining like a good un...

Wheel off and one manky looking drum...
20140608_143823.jpg

...which will be replaced when I do the brakes as this is looking a little shocking..
20140608_143942.jpg

Removed the wheel bearing...
20140608_143947.jpg

...and cleaned it all up a bit...
20140608_145023.jpg

Manky old bearing next to spangly new one...
20140608_145919.jpg

These should literally just pull off and push on with no special tools but they have been known to get tight if they are that gone and seen heat...

Tighten the new (supplied in the kit) nut to 175nm
20140608_150046.jpg

...and the worst bit of the whole job is getting the cap knocked on straight!!... soft faced mallet and perseverance and shes done :)
20140608_150523.jpg

Cleaned up the inside of the drum and refitted... wheel on, torque up, job done :D

....continued in next post...

....continued....

On to the other side... not a good start... locking screw wouldn't budge and was pretty much chewed up... I tried a token gesture of penetrating fluid but it was obvious this wasn't gonna move...
20140608_152302.jpg

...so I undid the hub nut and attacked it on the pillar drill... that sorted it
20140608_153314.jpg

Unfortunately this appears to the least of my worries... something looks like its leaking...
20140608_152520.jpg

The shoes weren't soaked in fluid but there is clearly something up so cleaned it all up and added brake cylinders to the list of things to do LOL...
20140608_153505.jpg

I was working outside as Bill was mapping a customers big turbo S3 and all the ramps were full... looks like I put it all back together just in time...
20140608_155534.jpg

I then finished off fitting a FMIC to another S3 and called it a day... busy day, long day but got lots done...

Undecided on what colour to get the wheels done... almost tempted to go for an anthracite colour but the OE freak in me wants to stick to the same colour I got my S3 wheels done..
20140204_155842.jpg

...or they do a nice sparkly silver too (was a bit too much for the S3 but tempted on the A2)
20140204_103936.jpg

If I go for anthracite though I will need to sort the caps out as they will stick out a bit...

yep rain stopped play here too, managed air filter, oil and filter, cabin filter and then moved onto fuel filter (little ******), drums were coming off next but the heavens opened.

happy to see your post gives me a little insight in what to expect.

keep up the blog it's a great help.

*wow can't believe begger with a u after b is censored :)*

Got to love the weather... :)

The fuel filter is a bit of a b*gger (I believe mine is the later filter housing)... VAG suggest clamping off a shed load of surrounding hoses but in reality I only clamped off the one... worst bit for me was undoing the plastic cap which was tight and the 'nut' on the cap looked like it had been attacked with mole grips previously!!..

On a lighter note, I can report that the annoying humming from the rear is now gone... had a very quiet drive to work this morning lol

The steering wheel wobble I have been having seems to be a combination of wheel balance and warped discs... the wobble is pretty much gone now thanks to fitting a pair of the wheels I got from Steve B (Birchall) but there is just a hint of wobble there still so more work to do I feel...

Had a quick look over the bushes while I was poking around underneath the car and they all look a tad tired... I will be looking to replace them with poly bushes I think to tighten things up a bit... Powerflex don't list the A2 in their catalogue but they do list the Fabia which shares most of the same bushes... just need to check the part numbers to be sure and add them to the list for the suspension refresh I have planned at some point...

its a little way off yet but might look to at least replace the front arm bushes as I need to take the arms off and clean them up so makes sense to do the bushes too...

<tuffty/>

Hi tuffty

Came across another bush manufacturer today - http://www.superpro.eu.com/ Again they don't list anything for the A2 but may be able to sort something out.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers Spike

Thanks mate... I have heard of super pro before... A3/S3 boys use the caster adjust bushes from these guys to good effect... plan to use them myself on the S3 once she is running again.

Will add it to the research pile... I am also looking at OE 'uprated' bushes from other cars too... the Fabia VRS has different rear beam bushes that retain a degree of OE comfort but tighten things up a bit at the back end...

Interesting day... I have found a front bumper that rivals a TT one in the 'how much fun can you have removing a bumper... NOT!' category... although no where near as bad as a Mk4 chassis beetle one...

Elsa was as helpful as ever (sarcasm btw)... its always a pain when you do something like this for the first time as you are not sure how much you can push and pull without breaking something so as it was a sunday anyway I took my time

Removed the bonnet for access, removed the undertray then removed the wheels and undid the arch liner...
20140615_105837.jpg

...this gives access to the four screws (torx 20) holding the bumper to the arch/wing...
20140615_105847.jpg

Now it gets interesting... you have to essentially pull the bumper out of a location slot in the arch... this was a little tight on mine due to dirt etc... I also used a trim tool to lever the bumper out of the slot using a cloth to protect the paintwork....
20140615_114635.jpg

The top section of the bumper is clipped in... I just carefully pushed on the white clip pictured below...
20140615_114705.jpg

....and carefully prised out the top of the bumper...
20140615_114648.jpg

Repeat on the other side and undo the poppers along the front... then remove the bumper... don't forget to unclip the foglight plugs if you have them...

So... think I have spotted the problem
20140615_115647.jpg

Removed the condenser... top connection was tricky, lower one was easy... I had already taken it over to my mates place to get it degassed but there was nothing in it as it had clearly all leaked out... looks like a previous owner had driven into a kerb or something from the damage, it also damaged the radiator a little too but thankfully not enough to create a leak it seems...
20140615_123649.jpg

Fitted the replacement condenser after giving the front a bit of a clean... blew the rad through with an airline to clear any blockages and used new seals for the aircon connections...
20140615_140306.jpg

Fixed the damaged trim that holds the outside air temp sensor as this took a bit of a hit by the looks...
20140615_140315.jpg

...cleaned all the dirt from the groove in the arch and the bumper...
20140615_141449.jpg

Put it all back together and happy days... just need to drop over to my mates garage to get him to re-gas the aircon and hopefully it will stay in this time lol

Was hoping to get the new uprights fitted today too but time ran away and after a quick look over the state of the pinch bolt and track rod ends I didn't have much faith in it ending too well from the apparent corrosion of the threads... I have new pinch bolts on order and will need to take a day off work when Bill has a ramp free to do this in case I need to order some replacement track rod ends in if mine end up a mess when I undo the nuts

Another job down

Well... took the car to my mates to get the aircon recharged... held the gas which was a start... however... (always seems to be a however!!!)...

...the compressor doesn't appear to be kicking in :(

Checked the voltage to the pump and that was fine so it can only really be the compressor... no idea how long the aircon has not been working so I guess the compressor could have suffered... had a cursory look at the drivers side fuses and they appeared ok but I don't know where the aircon fuse is tbh... will have to look it up...

Disappointing really... I know there is an aircon compressor kicking around the workshop from a Mk4 Ibiza which is a similar bit of kit to the A2 one so will have a look and see if that will fit..

Failing that I guess its back to eBay... booo... a break can not be had it seems :)

<tuffty/>

Ok... after a bit of research I came across this thread..
http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?22276-Ac-compressor-dead!

Spike... you mention about faults with the flaps etc... would these faults prevent the compressor from turning on? in fairness the voltage didn't look as high as I would have thought when my mate measured it...

Reason I say this is I know I have had a few fault codes come up on HVAC... when I first got the car it was quite a few...
