Chat My Audi A"

Hi all. My name is Jason Clatworthy. I'm a proud owner of an A2.

However the previous owner did some modifications of which I do believe may be playing a role in her "hick-upping". So during this month I'm sorry to announce I will be asking question after question to all you A2 experts so I can (through your help) get her back in full working order. So here we go my first of three questions for today in this forum:-
1. I have a K n N filter. I cant seem to locate the MAF metre/sensor. I think it has been bypassed. How would it be done. Can I reinstate it and refit an original air filter?

2. The steering cowling (upper and lower) has been removed (why I don't know..............) I have no screws, does anyone know what ones I need. I do also believe I have to remove the steering wheel, which involves removing the airbag. Any suggestions. Can I just unplug and re plug safely???

3. Lastly (sorry), When I'm driving her I can hear a slight noise (the only way I can describe is when I drove HMF land rovers the tyres made a distinctive noise). As previously described, the noise I've literally had my head out of the window but I cant pick up the road noise. Only when all windows are shut then the noise is quite distinctive. Silly question apart from being tyres what else could it be. What checks do I need to do, to do my process of eliminations.

So there you have it guys and dolls my three questions. bit drawn out I know, but I can only apologise. I want her to be perfect. which means sorting this mess out

Thanks again for reading this post. I look forward in the reply's

Best Regards

Jason

Welcome
1- which model do you have?
2- there is very likely to be a breaker on here to supply the needed bits for the cowl
3- wheel bearing? Does they noise increase with speed?

Hi,

I would bet money on it being the tyres.

The A2 seems prone to tyre noise.

Last week I had a recon gearbox fitted, the synchros were worn and there was a noise that seemed to be coming from the diff. The wheel bearings were fine.

So I was a little disappointed that the gearbox change didn't solve the noise as well as the synchro problem.

I changed the wheels as a last resort (just put another set on I had lying around) and the noise was drastically reduced.

But there was still noise from the tyres and it seems that until you really notice the noise it doesn't seem obtrusive.

I have three other A2s at the moment and never noticed any tyre noise, but now I can hear it on all three, but then I usually have the radio on and so probably just didn't notice it.

So before you spend a fortune on parts etc. see if you can borrow another set of wheels and see if that changes the noise.

Recent law changes mean that when you buy tyres now they have to specify just how noisy they are!

Cheap tyres can seem to be a bargain, but they can often be very noisy (due to the compound and design of the tread_)

I can help you out there, you can't find the MAF sensor because it hasn't got one ;)

As for the airbag don't think about it unless you are confident in handling things like that, if it went off it could kill you!

Cheers

I can recommend another 'fix' for tyre noise. Buy a TDi. You won't notice the tyres with the rumble from the little 3 cyl a few feet away from your head:)

LOL, LIKE THAT !!!!!

But I actually LIKE the TDI engine note, there is something quite addictive about that great little engine.

When I bought our first A2 (for the wife!) I was convinced (before driving it) that I wouldn't ever want to drive it, being a "sluggish and noisy" oil burner!!
I couldn't have been more wrong, the tdi pulls like a train and seems "quick" although all of the official figures show that it actually isn't that quick.
Whenever we go out I tend to CHOOSE the TDI out of the other cars I own!!!!

Hopefully tdi drivers will confirm that the noise is quite "addictive" and the engine is amazing!

Or is it just me?

Shreddedmeat,

Thanks. I just cant understand why they would take off the cowling and not put it back on???? bizare

It is a bit bizarre. What exactly is missing? Here's a pic of my steering column mid way though my cruise control installation - is it the black plastic parts you can see hanging above and below the steering column that's not there?

Cheers

I concur!

I wasn't a fan of Diesel engine noise per se, and expected a sluggish drive. The A2 I bought was the first and only A2 I've driven and I remember the first drive well. I'd expected it to feel like my wife's honda jazz 1.4 petrol, what with the similar displacement, power and I think 0-62 times but noisy due to the TDi. How wrong I was. The little thing felt like a tank in miniature, but a lightweight tank that pulled like a little train from low revs. Was sold on it right there.

The noise is oddly charming. And the thought of only 3 cylinders being under the bonnet is a bit crazy.
