Mystery item on my windscreen

Hi there, my 2005 FSI continues to throw mystery objects at me, the more I look around it !

Today, I discovered this item stuck to the inside upper right corner (LHD car) of my windscreen.

Carefully removing the plastic cover revealed this :

which seems to have a 2 wire cable disappearing under the headlining into the bonding mastic of the actual windscreen.
As the screen is cracked & will be shortly replaced, it would be nice to know what this is, before the screen fitter asks me
what to do with it !!

My car originally came from Germany (yes I know, don't they all !) & passed through 4 previous owners, none of which I can contact, before I bought it.
It has original Nav plus, with the Radio/CD/TV button, so was wondering if it was anything to do with the TV system, which obviously doesn't function now
as it was all pre-digital.
I know that the Nav system antenna should be somewhere behind the dashboard, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what this 'chip' is for.

No doubt, someone much wiser than me will be along very soon to educate me further ?.

This is truely a fantastic Forum of knowledge on all items A2 related (and more....)

Cheers, Martin

Looks like an aerial to me but hard to determine the frequency from the photo. Does the car have DAB?

Can you trace the wires and are they coax?

Cheers

Hi there, the car has the OE Nav + system (RNS-D) & as far as I know, it does not have DAB or DAB+ as standard, since chioce is only the usual AM/FM options on the radio.
I cant follow the cable too far under the headlining, as it goes into the screen bonding mastic only 2 to 3mm behind the 'chip', which would tend to say it is an OE fitment & not aftermarket (toll tag, parking sensor etc.) item. It could be a co-ax cable, as one wire is appears to be shielded from the other, but I'm really not sure.

I'm really looking to hear from another A2 owner who has spotted the same type of thing in their car.

Does anyone know how to actually tell if a car has the TV & Teletext optional system fitted ? This was a £700 option , back in the day, so it would be nice to know if I have got it, even though it now is no longer operational !!

I get the feeling that all may become clearer when I have the windscreen replaced.

@Xzorot , thanks for your similar suggestion.

I was just looking at 7zap at the infotainment diagrams and it is not mentioned. It seems the TV aerial is in the tailgate.

I reckon it’s some sort of aftermarket aerial.

Hi again & thanks for the search that this question is creating !!

The emergency antenna could be a candidate, but the 7zap image doesn't show where it is located on the car & appears to be quite big, compared to my mystery item which is approx 6cm long x 1cm wide.

I've had a thought that it may be related to the telephone installation unit F 8Z-4-000001>> hands free installation that my car also has, but l'm not sure about that, as l think that uses the ariel mounted on the rear most section of the OSS.

Jeez, there are so many electronic boxes in these cars, but lots of people who know their way around them, so l'm sure the mystery will get solved soon.

It's really the way that the attached cable is routed into the screen bonding & not just laying under the headlining that makes me believe it is an OE item & not related to anything after market.

Will get more info & pics when the screen is replaced in the next 2 weeks.
