Mystery item under the bonnet

Am wondering if anyone can help me - I have recently bought my first Audi A2 which is a 2003 1.6 FSI model. As is often the way, I started off replacing front discs and pads, and am now on a complete suspension upgrade. Whilst removing the driver's side suspension strut I noticed what looked like some sort of pressure regulator, that should have a small hose going to the top of it. Please see pictures. I cannot find the offending hose anywhere. My guess is it is a vacuum hose from the inlet manifold, but I am blowed if I can find it. The car drives fine ,by the way. Any ideas would be most welcome.
This is a great forum by the way - I have learned so much.

So from what I can see of mine, there are 3 hoses to the rear for fuel in, fuel feed out and fuel return and bunged up front hose mount. Hope that helps a bit. Happy to take more photo's but had to do this in the dark in the garage so not my best work! ;)

I would say you are just missing the bung.

Fantastic ! That has to be about the easiest fix I've had on this car so far. So, thank you for taking the time for taking the photos for me.
Perhaps you could cast your eye over the the photos I have just put on. I have also found, disconnected and tucked behind the plastic intake pipe, a 7 core cable neatly clipped all the way back to the back of the car where it disappears into the rear driver's inner wing. I have had all of the boot out and a lot of the interior panels to fix the alarm siren, but don't recall seeing this cable anywhere. It's not important, and for now i will leave it like it is, but can you think of any extras or Audi accessories that would have required this cabling? The car has working Audi parking sensors, so is nothing to do with that. Any ideas?

OK, thanks guys for your opinions. Yes I think the removed towbar/A frame electrics is the most likely scenario. Anyway it is an interesting car with some nice optional extras. It has headlamp washers which I've not seen before plus the usual OSS and Bose and reversing sensors. I am waiting for new springs and shocks (Bilstein B3/B4) from Spring-Loaded. It is coming up for a 5 week waiting time (German suppliers very slow). Itching to get it all back in one piece.
