Needs opinions! Mild?Misfiring FSI

Hello everyone, a few weeks ago I bought a 04 reg A2 1.6 FSI with 76000 miles on the clock in Mauritius Blue, no EML when test driving, but after arriving home eml was on, a bit of motor way driving with Wynn injector cleaner cleared it but after about 700 miles of motorway driving the light came back. At that point I used scanner to see what is going on and the error code turned out to be p0302, cylinder 2 misfire, so I carefully looked at the tachometer, I can see that at idle the car is a little bit rough and the the rpm indicator was moving very slightly about 10 rpm up and down and apart from that I don't feel much power loss or hesitation at speed or moving off. I send that car for a major service at a VW Audi specialist as I was not sure about when the car was last serviced, they changed oil, filters and spark plug and checked ignitions coils. In order to find the cause of the misfire they also did a compression test and found that the cylinder 2 pressure is about 30% lower than other cylinders and at that point they suspect it could be valve bit sticking but they suggest leave the misfire as it is. When I got he car from the service the EML light is off but came up shortly after. I saw in the forum many 1.6 FSI has misfire issue much worse than mine I am wondering if anyone would have any idea about the cause of misfire or any opinion if I should just drive as it is?

Yes what fuel are you using? My 1.6 FSI had bouncy idle until I put a tank of shell V power in it and now it’s nice a smooth idle :)

If you didn’t know FSI’S are very fussy on what fuel you use. If you use supermarket fuel sometimes they just cut out :) (what I’ve heard on here)

Personally go to a shell garage fill it with shell V power and see what happens :) I’m 90% confident it will run better:)

It probably ran on normal petrol before but Since I got the car I have been using shell V-power (RON99) or BP ultimate (RON 97), so it is unlikely to be the fuel, the problem is that I perceive that it is not a serious misfire 10 rpm up and down when idle but there is an eml, I do like the car so I don't know if I should get to the bottom of it.

Change the fuel filter my 1.4 petrol had bouncy idle but the car drove as it should and didn’t loose power but after changing the fuel filter it sorted it :)

No more bouncy idle YAY :)

If that doesn’t work I’d probably say the high pressure fuel pump is on its way out ???

If you didn’t know the 1.6 FSI’s like emptying your bank account every month lol ?

Also the EML will always be on it’s a 1.6 FSI ?

The only way to get the EML light off is to spend £1500 on it and then after 3 months of it being off it will come back on ?

Hope you get it sorted out bud :)

Hi Alex,

Welcome.

Yes, use 99 octane petrol but surely the problem is the reduced compression on cylinder 2, which needs fixing first and the misfire on 2 will most likely disappear. If your garage's diagnosis is correct I wonder if anyone has comments on the suitability of a Terraclean as a potential remedy or is it just a waste of money? Otherwise it is head off ....

Andy

PS. I think you should reconsider the size of your idle wobble. A healthy FSI idles at 800rpm.

Before I buy the car I did read on this forum that 1.6 FSI is not the most reliable variants

Thanks for all the comment so far, it is pointing to 800 rpm when idle but wobbles up and down just a tiny little bit not even half of the fine marker but would appreciate opinions on terraclean. Would also welcome comment on if this would progressive become much worse misfire if left unsorted and what is the consequences in terms of long term damage for this kind of misfire.

Yes, it is a small wobble, but should not be there.

Some information on Terraclean here...

The question is you are trying to cure a problem, not just maintence.

Andy

It looks like I may give terra clean a try but I an not sure if it will do much to the intake valve for the direct injection FSI, other than that the only choice to get to the bottom of it is head off then, not sure I can afford that to do it by a garage as I don't think I have all the necessary tools. FSI is difficult.

You could try spraying something directly into the 'air intake', maybe 'egr cleaner', etc.., as this must pass the (inlet) valve seats ??
Tip: Acetone is very good for cleaning off carbon/sticky deposits ;).
I've just put 1 half litre in with 20 litres of 97ron , its not gone bang  ..YET!! :p

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! But something dramatic happened today I drove the car to work and back (100 miles total) and on the way back there was some intense driving, but the run was smooth and when I reached home I checked the error code first time since the service and I got p0352,p0353, p0354, and a pending p0171, i thought that was strange, tonight when I started the car the car jerked like crazy, I understand that p0352-p0354 means that the coil packs have problems, but I am amazed how can three of them gone bad all in one go!

Changed all four ignition coils, now the car can drive and the mild misfire on cylinder 2 remains.
FSIs can take a little while to get to the bottom of. It's because they were technically ahead of their time rather than an inate unreliability. It's taken me 3 years to get mine running properly. I've had two cylinders rebored, a new head gasket and new intake manifold gubbins. But I've always planning on keeping the car and the amount I've paid out is less than I would have lost on depreciation on a more modern car.
She is now awesome to drive.
To be honest, I wouldnt take it near an Audi garage. If you can find a good vw audi specialist, that will save you a lot.
They really are worth persevering with. It wont hurt it to drive it around whilst you are getting it sorted.

It's a long shot, but, try cleaning the Earth Wire (behind & below N/S headlamp - 13mm bolted on the chassis),
as I have read several Items where multi misfire faults have been cured by cleaning this. ;)

Very interesting. I've got a 1.6 FSI purchased March(same colour!). Done 3K miles to date on (mostly) Shell V power and using that has picked up the power a fair bit over the months. I get a Cyl 3 misfire code but someone prior to me bodged in a new coil there. Idles pretty steady but not perfect. One change that did make a noticeable difference was putting in BOSCH FGR6HQE0 4-point electrode Spark-Plugs(it had Feb 2019 Denso's in). You might try those. I just got the foot brake switch warning light glitch today.....P0571, ordered a new one and cleaned the current one which has taken the EPC light off the dash(for a bit).

Some update, bought VCDS online and recorded misfire on my way to work, it looks as if misfire on cylinder 2 only happens when the car is idle, when car runs at high rpm, there is almost no misfire at all! I am convince it must be the sitting of injector 2, does anyone know how much to refit the injectors?

Try swapping the coil pack on 2 with one of the others first. If the miss fire moves, it's coil pack. Mac.
