New 6 speed gearbox method - passat '11 onwards MYP gearbox

Hi dj_efk

If you have the old 5 speed sport embilum I'd be interested if the chrome is good? Upgrading mine and the one I have is terrible.

Thanks
I'm not sure what Merlin is fitted with now but the car is a SE spec - did they differ between Sport and SE? Either way, PM me your number and I can whatsapp a picture of it in a few months when I'm back in the UK and with the car (if you still want it by then!).

Hello everybody,

I own a 1.4 TDI 75 hp BHC without DMF and after 400,000 km the original gearbox makes a lot of bearing noise. I am thinking of installing a MYP gearbox. But after reading many comments in this forum and in the German forum, it was not clear to me which is the starter that would best adapt to this combination so that the interference between the starter and the flying wheel is the most correct possible. From what I see, using the original starter of the A2 produces premature wear of the sprockets, by not making a correct interference.

Regards.

I'm using a CAYC starter from a 2014 Audi A1 (02Z911024H) with my MYP box, but that's with an ATL engine rather than a BHC.
I'm not 100% sure about the suitability of the MYP gearbox or starter required for the BHC. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.

The standard starter is the way to go with the BHC I believe from the feedback of those that have done it on the ATL you need the CAYC starter due to the different flywheel, but I don’t believe this is the case with the BHC and AMF engines

On my AMF we needed to use the starter from the donor. The a2 starter was difficult to align as it’s marginally smaller.

Now that’s interesting, I know the ATL it will chew the flywheel teeth as doesn’t fully engage but for the AMF I thought it was normal for everyone to use their stock starter from the a2

Morning all,

This is something I am very interested in having done in time. I have a 2002 (52) 1.4 TDI AMF.

After reading all the posts regarding the MYP gearbox can someone confirm which starter motor I need to obtain or if indeed the standard starter motor works. I’d no doubt ask @chumsofmanutd to do this work for me as this is well beyond my capabilities.

If anyone thinks this can be done on a driveway in a few hours I’d happily travel to you for you to complete it once I have the parts required. Of course paying for your time.

I’m constantly looking for a decent priced MYP gearbox on websites and when I get near a beakers yard. It would be good to obtain all the parts before I have this done.

Kind regards,

Tom

If you had gearbox out previously and have the tools it'll probably be fairly smooth and could be done in a day i guess...

Did clutch/dmf on my ATL and it took me solid 3 days to wrestle all the bits off of it and figure out what was what as never done a gearbox off job prior. Mind clutch was proper stuck onto the drive shaft too making it that much more fun...

i believe MYP needs some grinding as well (at least i believe I remember mention of this in previous posts) to fit.

Will see about doing something similar too, potentially, but have plenty rattles in the engine bay to think about for now...

The original starter was used on my TDi75.
Were you able to check if the interference and distance were correct between the starter sprocket and the flywheel? How many km / miles do you traveled with the MYP gearbox installed? Did you have any other problems during the installation? Your engine is a AMF or a BHC?

Thank you very much AndyP

On my AMF. We could get the original starter to work but it made a slight grinding noise. Theres a bit of wiggle room as its slightly smaller than the passat starter. So perhaps we just couldn't get it aligned nicely. The starter from the passat that the MYP came from however seems to work perfectly. If getting the MYP I'd recommend grabbing the starter motor with it.

Which starter motor reference is the one you got from the Passat? From what I see in the Audi parts list, depending on whether the car has a Start-Stop system or not, the starter reference changes. I imagine it will be the same dimensionally and the reference change will be due to the fact that it will be a more durable starter as well as a little more powerful 2 vs 2.2 kW.

Thanks a lot in advance nick4tl.

Sorry, forgot to say, mine is a 2005 BHC, I didn't check any clearances etc but the garage who did the work for me are top guys, proper old school mechanics who would have told me about any potential problems. A number of other people have also done this conversion and I'm only aware of one having and issue it it was with the TDi90 engine. Mine has probably done about 15,000 miles since the conversion and has been perfect.

Hi. Im afraid I haven't a clue as it came from a breakers yard. I think it was a 2011 Passat bluemotion. The plug/socket is different to the A2 one as well. so if getting it get the plug with some cable on it as well I guess. Based on AndyP's experience though perhaps you may like to see how you get on with the A2 starter and if it doesn't work out go for the passat one.

I'm confused.

Spoke to Vince at Stealth y'day & was all good. Sussed what gearbox I was after, had my eye on one on the Bay & so put a quick call into Stealth again, just to be sure what I was looking at was ok. Then get told - albeit not by Vince - that I need the starter motor as well.

Hmmm.

Check with the gearbox supplier & he hasn't got the starter motor. Don't really want to buy each from different places so back to square one. Thing is, I spoke to Vince at length y'day & he defo never mentioned the need for a starter motor. And the experiences listed above aren't exactly conclusive.

I hate buying stuff for cars for this reason :-(

Guys, as far as I can tell it’s simple.

Just buy a starter from a CAYC engined car for 20 quid or so, that’s what’s needed according to multiple people who have done this conversion. Literally type “CAYC starter” into eBay.

For the TDI75 you can use the original starter if you wish, although there’s some debate about it. For the ATL / TDI90 you can’t.

Many thanks for the clarification. I've this morning ordered both.

Team,

I've updated post 194 - I'd be interested to hear from those who have a six speed conversion as to whether they have to rev their engines hard in 1st when going up the gears, as the calculated RPM / road speeds in 1st would appear to suggest it.
