New 6 speed gearbox method - passat '11 onwards MYP gearbox

Evening,

My knowledge is very limited in this area but I think I’m correct in saying there are only 2 ways that the A2 gets the speed signal. It’s either the cable from the gearbox or the ABS sensor.

Looks like you’re ready to have a 6 Speed Conversion adventure.

Kind regards,

Tom
G' Evening Tom,
Yes, it looks very promising now.
I will have to do all the work my selves and I have to combine the gearbox swap with some other details I want to test out, so it will take time.
In the mean time I will follow your project and be happy on your behalf ?
A long leg'ed gearbox has been so high on my dream list since 2008 and finally... it seems to come trough ;)

Cheers

As this thread is now quite long I thought it might be handy if I summarise from my experience with a 2002 AMF with the MK60 ABS:
1) If searching for a six speed box keep an eye out for the PTU gearbox too. It's confirmed to work well with the AMF and seems to have same gear ratios as MYP. I found it easier (and cheaper) to get a low mileage and newer PTU than an MYP (the PTU I got came out of a 2014 Audi A3 1.6 TDI).
2) If changing the clutch make sure it's a known good make (LUK or Valeo seem ok). I had woeful rattles which turned out to be from a cheap clutch.
3) I can also confirm that if you go for the starter motor from the donor car you wont have the after-start squeal that the A2 starter gives and it will easily align correctly. The A2 starter is a tiny bit smaller in diameter and whereas it can be used there's a chance it will be misaligned and damage flywheel teeth. If using the donor starter make sure you get the plug with some wire on it as its different to the one on the A2 loom.

Hope thats helpful. Im just summarising info supplied from other generous members here that I can confirm correct from my experience.

@nick4tl
- brilliant summary, both PTU gearbox and clutch issues are new elements to me (and very good to be aware of) ?

Not directly gearbox related but; I just cannot stop being very impressed of how people take care of each other on this Forum ?:)?

Do the MYP gearbox have serial number and "MYP" marking/tag on the outside of the gearbox?

I'm asking since I will pick up a gearbox next week and the seller say he cannot supply pic of MYP marking/serial number.... and then I get a bit conserned...

We have agreed that I pay when I have the box in my armes, so I have 60 sec to check.
Any advice?

Cheers

Yes they have the marking "MYP" engraved on the housing, it's in the orange marked spot between the shift tower and black plastic cable holder thingy.

Good luck.

Here my own (MZN code). There are some numbers, don't know if it's a serial number.

Hello everyone,

Reading about the different gearboxes that can be mounted on the 1.4 TDI BHC engine. What is the difference between the MYP variant and the PTU variant? From what I see they have the exact same gear ratio. But ... Could someone tell me what differences the two gearboxes have? Is the installation of a PTU box more complicated compared to an MYP?

Kind regards,

Miguel.

Thanks a lot @dj_efk . I hope to find soon a MYP or PTU gearbox with its starter motor to install on my BHC engine.

Miguel.
Miguel (and any others who were inspired to upgrade to 6 gears - as I was) - any progress with finding / installing your new additional gear?

Nothing to add other than this thread again prompted me to have a look on eBay: I'm sure prices are gradually coming down on these two boxes.

Hopefully one will crop ip down my end at some point as it's a conversion I fancy doing on my 205K mile TDi.

I found that there seems to be no logic in the pricing - MYP and PTU always seemed to be quite strongly priced in the 400+ quid range and there are other Qxx coded boxes (same family, just more recent) that are unrealistically expensive (lots more £), so I started looking for alternative codes to see if there were any that were more reasonable. Got a PTW ex Golf Bluemotion for £225 including £50 delivery (I made an offer and used an Ebay discount code), from memory on around 80,000 miles less than my original box. New oil etc, and an ex Audi A3 or Seat starter motor. Haven't had a chance for the long motorway runs it was bought for, but very happy with it so far, and was able to re-cycle my 5-gear box into my other Tdi.

Excellent work, another gearbox code then: MYP, PTU and PTW. Certainly seems that the net is getting wider bit by bit.

I found the same. I was after a PTW specifically as the ratios are longer particularly in gears 1-4, I just got lucky with a low mileage one from a breakers who I think were just glad to shift stock during the first lockdown.

Love the super-direct, quick shift action and the effortless way it cruises quietly at the national limit, plus the way that in every speed limit zone there’s a gear that has you travelling at the legal maximum with the engine turning at 1750rpm or so. It really is the upgrade to save up for. Don’t expect any fuel savings to pay back the cost though, that’s the only slight disappointment for me so far, although admittedly I’ve only driven the car in very cold wintry weather so far.

There are actually 4 gearbox codes in total that have been successfully transplanted - see HERE - MYP, PTU and NTG all have the same ratios. The PTW has the longer gears. All of them require the same method to install and you’ll need the starter from the donor car just to be safe - as a bonus the starter spins the engine more easily and eliminates the chance of the classic A2 “shriek” from developing.

Ah thank you, sounds for me as though the trio of MYP, PTU and NTG would be best perhaps as it's quite hilly on my commute and the current ratios work well around here, it would just be nice to knock the revs back a bit on the motorway. I need to have a good read around the subject but feel one coming on now the prices / availability are making things easier. Obvs for me, no labour costs either which makes a big difference.

Maybe if I get time I’ll do another summary of this entire thread like I did for the lower front suspension arms thread - it could then be made a sticky.
