Visited Harewood house Motoshow today and saw the new A3. It was parked next to an A2 and looked huge. The old A3 was quite large, but the new one seems almost as big as the A4. The bonnet goes on for yards and the boot would swallow tonnes of luggage. The interior finish is excellent and echoes the A2. Price for the 2.0TDi was about £21,500, but I would imagine the extras fitted to the one on display would push this to nearer £25k.

Saw one at the Canary Wharf Motorshow last weekend in London too... an Audi UK guy came over to talk to me about the car and I asked him straight away why are there no A2s on display? Very sheepishly he said that a lot of people had been asking after the A2, but he had no explanation... sad that Audi UK doesn't even know the A2 exists or promotes it!

As to A3. Not as much of a style statement as the original A3 when that came out. In 1996 it was just soo cool... this new version looks too much like the old one and is not something someone would buy to say look at me, I'm different, I buy clever cars and just look at the styling... nope it only says boring, boring to me. Rather buy a Golf mark 5 when that comes out with the same chassis anyway... the A3's rear lower bumper is too heavy as well. Read some of the comments on the A2 body kit that is fully colour coded and you'll soon realise why it looks so heavy: the entire body is colour coded and there is no more black lower half to hide the car's height. (Also makes it more expensive to repair as this is where sans mudflaps you get a lot of stone damage... give me black any day there...)

The interior is really good quality, but again ho-hum Audi. I stepped in and it feels no different than my A2 really even down to exactly the same radio as I have... you do want to feel as if you've bought something new when you move up! And the texture of the main dashboard is too much like the Alfa 147's: like rough, unfinished rubber! The A2 has a hard dash, but it LOOKS good. This A3 dash does not look good to me... How many times a day do you touch your dash anyway? And looking at it? hmmm

Nope no A3 in my garage thank you.

BUT mr Audi UK said I should wait 18 months for the one I'm after: the new and different looking A3 Estate and specifically I want an A3 5 door allroad quattro 2,0 TDI with a DSG Tiptronic gearbox! That sounds nice (though unfortunately it will have said same Alfa 147 dash!)

Reviews I've read don't think much of the 2.0 FSi refinement. Another reason to go for diesel. Trouble is, more of these FSi engines are being put in cars-do we not have a choice?.

Bar my next Ferrari I don't think I'd ever go back to petrol after sampling the torque and fuel economy of a diesel now... and since a Ferrari is well off... I'll be a diesel man for some time...

Just read the reviews of the new A8 diesel... it is so much better than even the 4,2 petrol that to me there is little point even considering the 3,7 petrol... you get better economy AND it's within less than a second as fast to 60 as the 4,2! Same story with the A2... so in future I think the FSI version will become the slower selling "niche" cars (as diesel were a few years ago) and the diesels will account for 70% of sales... Merc already sells about 60% of their S-class in Europe as the diesels...

So why on earth then is Audi UK only selling the new colour.storm version as a 1,6 petrol with NO diesel option?

i too was disappointed in the new A3 design, it is so boring and old looking...

if it looked good i would say classic looking but it is just old and tired and soul-less....

what a shame...

i agree with the previous poster, the new Golf looks pretty good...

And the new SEAT Leon even better!. ALl on the new Golf platform of course (don't know why we call it the Golf platform-we could call it the new A3 platform as it's the first car to use it.....or is the first to use it the new Golf MPV......hmmmmmm)
