New catalytic converter

Can anyone give me a rough idea how much a new cat might cost - presumably it'll be cheaper if I take it somewhere other than Audi?

Thanks

Got mine for £250 (inc VAT). Best to phone around and then beat them down. Try and get a metal one (new to scene) rather than a ceramic one. It will last longer, not crack but cost you more.

hi i am waiting for audi to get me a new cat,as its on back order. my car (1.6fsi) started illuminating the eml(red engine manegment light) on the dash. so i had it scanned and it had catalist emisions failure logged. so had an auto electrician have a look when the engine was running just to pinpoint the fault. he showed me that the cat wasn't getting up to temp so the ecu was switching the heater element on and off to try and get it hot.along with looking at other sensors he said my cat had failed. probably due to the first owner only doing short trips and doing only 20,000 miles in 4 years. the other problems i was getting were a flat bottom end (under 3000rpm)plus a slight rattle to the cat if you blipped the throttle. audi say the cat is £275 plus vat. i was advised not to get a pattern part as they can be suspect quality and life expectancy can be short. i dont plan on selling it so am going audi part. good luck mike

It's funny you mention the ECU because my engine light came on (although it was orange?) and an independent mechanic did a live scan and it showed two errors - ecu and cat. He said one could be causing the other but couldn't be sure. Cat has definitely gone so I'm hoping that triggered the ecu error code but can't be sure. This is in another thread if anyone thinks it sounds familiar but as I say, I'm hoping the two issues are linked and I won't have to remortgage my house to pay to fix a faulty ecu

An Audi stealer tells you not to use a pattern part! No surprise there then. Mine has a 3 year warranty that I am more than happy with. You pays......

hi badlyread its not an audi stealer its from an independent that uses some known reliable non genuine parts-his advice is all i'm passing on is that he has had poor performance from non audi cats and lambda probes so only recomends genuine.if you have had good life from a non audi part please recomend it and its cost with more details.
cheers mike
