Finally got round to installing the new tube that Dave gave me. Looks mighty fine now.

The old one is completely US. Hopefully the new LED bulbs will not get quite so hot.

And here is the internal damage

As you say, it's important to use either LED or standard 3W filament bulbs.
The latter are not easy to fine so many end up with the more common 5W version and these generate too much heat and scorch the sidelight tubes, well illustrated in your pics.

So I have stuck 9 smd LED bulbs in mine, will they be alright and melt the covers?

LEDs run at a much reduced temperature and so they will be fine, I have used those bulbs myself without problems.

LEDs are not cool (temperature wise!) they do generate some heat but much less than a standard bulb of the same illumination.

Hi,

How easy was the LED installation, and do you have a particular brand/seller off ebay to recommend?

It is a straight swap, best done with the headlamp off the car as with any A2 bulb change.

There are many dealers selling them on eBay, or contact a company called EMTuning.

I had no problem other than needing to reverse the bulb in the holder to get the polarity right. I don't have DIS and am not convinced that claims of 'error free' are true after reading some reviews of some bulbs. Can't vouch for these either

As fir the bulbs I bought. I bought these. Looked like quite good quality, and were quite stubby so fit in the tube. Anything longer might be problematic.

Any ones in particular that have the right polarity and don't give errors? Or some specs I should be looking for? I have a history of buying the wrong bulbs off ebay hehe :)

Think I will need to dissamble my headlights and clean them out because although I managed to get the moist out with silica gel packs, they are rather dirty on the inside. Thought I might aswell try and fit the LED lights if it is easy.

What is DIS?

The polarity doesn't matter on these bulbs because you can rotate them 180 and that switches the polarity the other way around.
It is only the "bayonet" type bulbs that you can't swap the polarity on without dismantling.

This pair on eBay are very cheap and look to be the right ones!!!

Very affordable, i'll give it a try I think.

Kits like these are no good? Is this the ones that are referred to as nightbreakers and arent any good?

Thanks again

I looked at that style before deciding on the one I finally bought, which I got for £3.49 and not the £5.95 advertised in the link i posted (seller obviously put the price up there!)
For the sake of a few quid it's worth trying I think.

Hi Daniel,

The problem with that kit is the 100W headlamp bulbs are illegal and so we can't recommend them. (even is some people use them and like the bright light)

But as stated they are just uprated normal headlamp bulbs with a pair of LED sidelight bulbs.

Thanks for explaining. I live in Sweden and I doubt that 100W is a problem here. I will order the below kit and hope for the best. The side lights you recommended were cheap but the postage was £10 to Sweden, the below kid only had £2 postage.

I'd stick with some good quality 55W Philips x-treme +130 or Osram nightbreaker bulbs.
Almost doubling the wattage will generate more heat and possibly overload the wiring / switches / relays in the headlamp circuit.
This link is for an Alfa car but the potential issues are the same and as per the comments from Ring (bulb manufacturer) it may also distort the plastic headlamp shell. http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-andamp-gt/194157-ring-rally-sport-100w-bulbs.html

Up to you if you want to take the risk but at least do your own research before installing such bulbs

Cheers Spike

Thanks for the warning.

Does anyone here have any negative experience from a 100W low beam bulb on their A2s? I dont want to break anything or melt any wires, just the current standard setup is quite halfass.
