New-look Front Grill

This has taken a while (because of other commitments), but I have finally fitted my revised front-grill/access flap. I started with the standard smooth grill. I ground-away the raised section

that allows for the mounting of the Audi emblem. The aim was to achieve a completely smooth grill and this was obtained by filling any holes with fibre-glass and filler, then sanding and

priming. I incorporated illumination behind the Audi emblem and to facilitate this, before fibre-glassing, I placed four balsa-wood segments in the eventual location of those LED lights.

When the fibre-glass had set, it was easy to prise-out the soft wood. The Audi emblem that I used originated from the Audi 100 model. It is held in place by three threaded pins that pass

through the grill. I added a forth pin to obtain better clamping. After priming, the grill was sprayed in body colour, Azure-blue. At the same time, a piece of thin "Lexan" sheet, cut to the

contour of the Audi emblem, had two coats of paint applied to the inner surface. This allowed the LED illumination to still pass through, but completely concealed those lights. Outwardly,

this grill appears to be plain and solid, painted uniformly in body colour. There is no evidence of the badge illumination. The badge was sealed to the grill surface with silicone, to prevent

moisture penetration. It was necessary to modify the "dip-stick" to enable the grill/inspection flap to be closed. I altered the finger-pull so that it pivoted. Another modification .... the profile of the grill-

surround that goes with the smooth grill is different to that of the slatted-grill. I much preferred the latter and had to shave a few mm's off the sides of the smooth grill for it to fit perfectly. I would

have thought that there are not many A2OC members who would of been aware of the grill-surround difference? Well, here's some photo's :-

I feel that the flush Audi Emblem looks SO much better! I don't understand why Audi designed it to sit proud?

like the colour coded grill :) as you have the same colour of my car how difficult was it to paint etc...

i would only consider spraying the grill but where did you get your paint supplies from and how much did it cost? would also love to do the side sills (too big a job for me i reckon) at some point but will need to speak to murdo about this again :)

cheers

Its great to see someone doing something different. I really like the flush look to the grille. Much better than factory and looks good colour coded. Not a big fan of the illuminated emblem but can appreciate the work that has gone into it.

Really like the look of the flush badge and later surround and colour coded.

For me I can live without the illumination, I guess you have it on a separate switch and not just hooked to the headlights? Else you will get a lot of unwanted attention from the police etc

No, they are on all the time with any lighting, even side-lights. No attention whatsoever from the police. I've had green badge lighting for a few years, but these LED's are blue, to match the paintwork.

Why should there be? They fully conform to the 1989 vehicle lighting regulations. They are not a "beacon" or a warning light. Last night, I came up behind a police vehicle on my way back from visiting a

friend on the Wirral. I was behind that car at two sets of lights and even parallel to it as it turned right. No issue at all, and I can't see why there should be! Anyway, the colour can be very easily

changed and the illumination isolated as well, but I'm quite happy with things as they are, at the moment.

Saying that, i have seen Lorries with blue lights on the front.

Looks like you did a great job, although its not my sort of thing.

Saying that, i have seen Lorries with blue lights on the front..

Yeah there was a fair bit of 'debate' on this before and my thoughts were originally that blue light on the front wasn't acceptable but I believe that providing they don't have the appearance of beacons and cannot strobe or flash they are permissable. As you say - there's many a truck with blue light detail on the front.

I see you live in Wales which perhaps they are more easy going on that sort of thing.

I know that in London they are hot on that thing as I was always lead to believe that you can only show white or yellow light to the front of the vehicle. Just because some lorries are showing a blue type light to the front doesn't make it legal.

I just wouldn't want to attract the wrong attention due to light colour after all that work

No, I don't think so! North Wales used to have a Chief Constable who was the most intolerant of his kind in the U.K.! Speed cameras everywhere ... you were even at risk for sneezing whilst driving! LOL!

No, I'm going to take it as it comes. We are all individuals and thank God we are! I am always intrigued by other A2OC members modifications and my A2 is just a hobby and an interest to me. I am

always thinking of further "improvements" to my A2. I have one or two in the pipeline, even now! Incidentally, the idea for my illuminated badge originated from the 1980's, when I did this mod to my Audi

200. And guess where the Audi emblem for my A2 grill came from? Yes, that very first application! I keep absolutely everything! A real "hoarder"!

Any Auto-paint specialists. They make the paint up easily using its code. Mine was Audi LZ5H Azurblau Pearl and cost £18 for a half-litre. I didn't need this amount and I have most of the tin left! You

would also need a 2-pack lacquer kit and paint thinners. However, if the work is done professionally, then the sprayer would usually have these, because they are universal. Here are a few more photos :-

The weather was better for these pictures!

My current project are revisions to my illuminated rear Audi emblem. It currently sits proud of the boot bodywork and doesn't look as tidy as it could. Sealing against moisture has also been problematic.

The red, LED lighting will be repositioned internally, enabling the original badge to be used in a totally flush profile. I think that it will look so much better!
