Good morning everyone, and thank you for letting me join,

My 1.4tdi needs a head gasket so wondering if anyone can recommend a garage in the Bridgewater or Devon areas who have experience of this?
I bought it intending to do this myself, but time is pressing, and I need a car on the road.

Was also wondering if it was worth putting a used polo AMF engine in as the current one is on 185k, but its had cambelt and kit replaced, and was supposedly good prior to the head gasket failing.

Thanks in advance!

It all depends on labour rates, if you can find a good TDI engine then it may well be worth fitting a replacement rather than repairing.

I know it’s not ideal, but a product called Steal Seal will give a temporary fix for a head gasket issue, so you could run it for about 6 months with this in it while you look for a good engine.

Thank you Steve,
I've seen an engine at a sensible price, so thinking to pick that up as at least I'll have a spare head if the one on my A2 turns out to be warped - from the amount of coolant that looked to have come out of the header tank and splashed around the engine bay I'd guess the PO drove it for some time like it...

Ahh, if it wasn’t you who had the head gasket fail then I’d Definately go for the replacement. So many non car people simply drive a car with faults until it stops.

How true that is we have a woman in the village driving a 4x4 with the big ends knocking like you wouldn’t believe ..but she’s still driving it ..oh yes ? I think she’s hoping it will go away nah!

Saying that, some cars do fix themselves. My wife’s car (Fiat 500L) had a terrible clicking noise when turning right. I’d examined everything and couldn’t find the problem. It has since fixed itself and we have no issue anymore ?

but that'f FIAT, (fix it again tomorrow), its keeping something for you to do on a day by day basis :)
